Get ready for something strange: fans at this year’s L.A. Comic Con will be able to “talk” to a holographic version of the late comic book legend, Stan Lee. Using artificial intelligence, the “Stan Lee Experience” will allow attendees to interact with a hologram inside a special booth. You can even take pictures with it or have a short, personal conversation for just $15 to $20. Stan Lee, who passed away in 2018 at age 95, is being brought back to life in a very 21st-century way.
Everything had to be approved by the estate of Stan Lee. While some might find this technology a bit unsettling, it’s likely Stan himself would have been thrilled. He was famous for bringing characters back to life in his comics-often as robots or holograms! Bob Sabouni, who leads Stan Lee Legacy Programs at Kartoon Studios, explained that they’re committed to ensuring any ‘voice’ of Stan aligns with his known beliefs. They have plenty of archival footage to work with, allowing them to create a simulation that captures his spirit, even if it doesn’t use his exact words. The company Proto Hologram was responsible for creating this Stan Lee simulation.
The Stan Lee hologram won’t just be at a single booth at L.A. Comic Con; it could pop up unexpectedly throughout the event, almost like a digital apparition of the comics icon. It might also introduce a Marvel Comics panel. However, because some people are uncomfortable with using artificial intelligence to recreate deceased figures, Marvel may decide to skip the hologram altogether. We’ll see what happens! L.A. Comic Con takes place September 26-28 at the L.A. Convention Center.
