‘An Incredible Feeling’: Grey’s Anatomy Star Kim Raver Opens Up About Female Director’s Taking Over The Set

In simple terms, the popular medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” on HBO is coming back for its 21st season in September, and fans are getting very excited! Before that happens, actress Kim Raver, who plays Dr. Teddy Altman, has shared openly about her experiences as a female director on the show and within the industry as a whole.

On August 10th, Raver (who directed the season 19 episode titled ‘Training Day’) shared her insights during a panel at the D23 fan convention in Anaheim, California. She highlighted the unique aspects of working on a Shonda Rhimes production, noting that the filming environment is distinct from other sets within the entertainment industry.

In her line of work, it was predominantly male-dominated, but she found it wonderful nonetheless. Regrettably, she rarely observed women in many of the roles.

In Shondaland, Raver found an encouraging environment where she could seize directorial opportunities. Although the journey wasn’t straightforward, Raver appreciated the assistance and guidance from her colleagues, particularly Kevin McKidd and Chandra Wilson. These experienced directors, who had directed 42 episodes collectively, were instrumental in helping Raver develop as a filmmaker. Moreover, Raver emphasized that both of them were exceptionally supportive during her training phase.

“I was utterly thrilled when Wilson handed me a stack of notes and guidance. It was an unforgettable experience for me; I found it immensely enjoyable, beneficial, and empowering. As I reminisce about this at the convention, I can’t help but recall the overwhelming sense of encouragement and support I felt. Not only did everyone urge me to excel, but I was also privileged to witness other women directing, editing, writing, and showrunning.”

Despite previously directing a TV movie called “Tempting Fate”, it’s essential to understand that roles like these aren’t casually picked up by Grey’s Anatomy actors. Instead, they require a tremendous amount of effort and dedication as she herself stated: “You have to work extremely hard.”
