As a die-hard fan of Amy Schumer, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for her upcoming Netflix comedy, “Kinda Pregnant.” Having followed her career since her breakout role in “Trainwreck,” it’s clear that she chooses her projects with care and conviction. This film seems to be no exception, as she felt “connected” to the role of Lainy Newton.
As a devoted admirer of Amy Schumer, I can say that she is meticulous in her project selections. However, when it comes to her upcoming Netflix comedy titled Kinda Pregnant, the actress felt an extraordinary “affinity” towards the character. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she shared that she wouldn’t accept a role just because she thought someone else could find it amusing – instead, she only takes on roles that resonate deeply with her.
In the movie, Schumer portrays Lainy Newton, a freshly single teacher with a long-held dream of becoming a mother. When her friend Kate (played by Jillian Bell) gets pregnant before her, Lainy feels envious and, in an impulsive move, dons a fake pregnancy belly. While pretending to be expecting, she unexpectedly crosses paths with her ideal man (Will Forte).
She shared that she had been eagerly anticipating a role that truly resonated with her, and in 2021’s film “The Humans” with A24, she found just that – a project she felt deeply connected to, thus marking her return to the silver screen.
In Kinda Pregnant, the concept portrayed was the contrast between the romantic ideal of marriage and child-rearing versus the actual experience. Schumer feels that everyone has their unique path when dealing with pregnancy, parenthood, fertility issues, or infertility, and she found this approach an effective way to delve into these complexities.
Despite having an undercurrent of intensity, the film titled “Kinda Pregnant,” penned by Julie Paiva, is essentially a comedy at its core. As director Tyler Spindel explained to the media, it’s not your typical romantic comedy; instead, it’s unconventional and ventures beyond the norm, all while maintaining its heartfelt essence.
In April, Schumer shared with Variety that she aims for this movie to rank among the ten funniest films in her career. She expressed confidence that it will be as amusing as “Trainwreck.” Additionally, the actress is hopeful that the film will create a sense of joy, happiness, and vulnerability simultaneously. Most significantly, she wants it to initiate fresh discussions.
We aim to provide viewers with an entertaining, delightful show that’s not overly dramatic and maintains a playful tone,” Spindel explained. The upcoming series titled “Kinda Pregnant” featuring Damon Wayans Jr., Alex Moffat, Joel David Moore, and others is set to debut on Netflix on February 5, 2025.
