Amprius Technologies. The name tasted like static on the ticker. Shares jumped today – a solid eighteen-plus percent. Not a bad day for a battery company in a world hungry for power. The market, it seems, had a sudden case of optimism. Or maybe just a short memory.
The numbers, when you peeled back the press release gloss, weren’t half bad. Revenue for the last quarter hit $25.2 million – a 137% climb year over year. That’s a leap, even in this inflated market. CEO Tom Stepien talked about expanding the customer base, over 550 now, and “advancing adoption.” Sounds like a sales pitch, but the numbers backed it up. A little.
They’d managed to drag themselves out of the red, at least on an adjusted EBITDA basis. $1.8 million positive. A flicker of profit in a sector that usually burns cash like a bonfire. Last year, it was a $4.8 million loss. Progress, maybe. Or a temporary reprieve.
Gross margin improved to 24%, up from negative 21%. That’s a swing. Someone finally figured out how to build a battery without losing their shirt. Or they’re really good at accounting. I’ve seen both.
A Glimmer of Hope
The forecast for 2026? They’re predicting at least $125 million in revenue, and a minimum of $4 million in adjusted EBITDA. Bold talk. The kind that usually gets you a visit from reality. CFO Ricardo Rodriguez sounded energized. They all do, when the numbers are going up. It’s a temporary condition.
They’re talking about a “scale-enabling cost structure.” That’s corporate speak for “we’re hoping we can keep this going.” The balance sheet is supposedly clean, but I’ve seen too many clean balance sheets turn muddy. The market, though, was buying it. For now. It always does, until it doesn’t.
Amprius. A small spark in a darkening energy landscape. Whether it’s a flash in the pan, or something more substantial, remains to be seen. I’ll be watching. Someone has to.
