AMC Reports Massive Quarterly Loss as Superman and Other Releases Fail to Lift Attendance

As I mentioned before, this summer was a major disappointment for movies, and now we have confirmation: AMC Theatres reported a significant financial loss for the recent quarter.

Several recent movies haven’t performed well at the box office, including the later installments of Thunderbolts (released in the second quarter of the year), the lowest-grossing Jurassic World film yet, James Gunn’s Superman, and Marvel’s disappointing attempt at The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

What did AMC report? Fewer people visited theaters

AMC Theatres reported a significant quarterly loss of $298.2 million, highlighting the challenges faced by movie theaters recently. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. stated that the film Superman helped increase their profits.

Despite recent releases like Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Fantastic Four, fewer people went to the movies this year compared to last year. These numbers confirm our earlier observations: while Superman boosted Warner Bros.’ earnings for the quarter, the overall movie industry isn’t performing as strongly as it has in the past.

As a big AMC fan, I was disappointed to see their latest financial results. Variety reported that they brought in $1.3 billion in the last three months, which is down about 3.6% from last year. They also lost more money overall. It seems like fewer people went to the movies, because both ticket sales and concession stand purchases were down during that time. Hopefully, they can turn things around with some exciting new releases!

AMC Confirms the Quarter Was Softer Than 2024

AMC’s recent attendance figures reveal a decline: ticket sales went from $744.2 million last year to $715.1 million this year, and food and drink purchases decreased by almost $40 million. This drop in customers happened despite the release of several major movie franchises, indicating a clear decrease in the number of people visiting theaters.

AMC CEO Adam Aron stated that 2024 unfolded as the company anticipated: a slow start in the first quarter, a strong second quarter, and then a decline in the third. This downturn matches the recent financial results, as this summer’s movie releases didn’t perform as well as hoped, particularly when compared to last year’s hits like Deadpool & Wolverine and Despicable Me 4.

AMC’s financial results met expectations, but the overall movie theater industry is struggling. Popular theater chains aren’t attracting as many customers as they once did, mainly because the movies themselves aren’t compelling enough to bring people in.

Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Fantastic Four Didn’t Match Last Year’s Hits

While Warner Bros. mentioned Superman‘s performance positively in their third-quarter report, it didn’t significantly boost movie theater attendance, particularly overseas. Jurassic World Rebirth and Weapons also saw success at the box office, and Fantastic Four joined the list of major summer releases.

Even with all of that, AMC still saw declines in admissions and food sales.

As I suspected, the latest numbers confirm what I was hearing about Superman. While the movie did bring in some extra money for Warner Bros. this quarter, it wasn’t the massive, game-changing hit some were hoping for, and it didn’t really give the box office a significant boost overall. It performed solidly, but didn’t exactly soar.

Honestly, looking at the whole year of releases, it wasn’t a bad year for movies, but it just didn’t have those huge blockbuster hits. People went to the cinema, sure, but not in the numbers theaters really needed to reach the same success they had in 2024. It was solid, but not spectacular, you know?
