Despite some past tensions between AMC and streaming services, Aron expresses a willingness to collaborate with Netflix. He mentioned that IMAX recently negotiated a deal to premiere Netflix’s 2026 Narnia film in theaters first, and AMC is backing this decision.
Apart from Aaron, there’s an opinion that films should screen for at least 45 days, with exceptions lasting up to 60-74 days. He argues that the current system, which removes movies after only 17 or 30 days, is flawed. In his view, extending theater runs would boost a film’s earnings. Moreover, he’s working on persuading major studios to adopt this proposed change, asserting it’s a pressing issue at the moment.
I’m strongly advocating for expanding the duration of movie theater windows, as I believe the ongoing industry tests have not been successful. In our opinion, the current 17-day and 30-day periods are too short. We aim to persuade all major film studios to extend the time movies spend in cinemas. This topic is a key discussion point right now.
Aron expressed, “We’re hoping to persuade Netflix that releasing films in theaters could benefit them. They’ve already done it with ‘Glass Onion’ and ‘Narnia’. We’ll have to wait and see how things develop. I’ve always felt that consumers’ demand for entertainment can sustain both a thriving cinema industry and a thriving streaming industry simultaneously.
Even though Aron is hopeful, it’s proving tough to win over Netflix. Their co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, has shown reservations towards conventional theater distribution. Instead, he advocates for the idea of releasing movies directly on Netflix, bypassing box office earnings, as he sees it as a more streamlined approach.
Sarandos stated at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention last September that we have the ability to invest $200 million in a movie and release it directly on Netflix, bypassing theaters, because the viewership is substantial enough to make this a more effective distribution method compared to trying to recoup some costs in the theater, which he considers less efficient.
As cinema’s landscape changes, the argument about movie theater release windows stays a heated discussion. Aron, on one hand, advocates for extended exclusivity in cinemas, while Netflix experiments with specific releases. It’s unclear if big studios and streaming services will adopt longer theater runs, but this issue certainly isn’t resolved yet.
