So, Ambiq Micro (AMBQ +8.19%). They had a quarter. Apparently, it was… good. The stock jumped. Eight percent. Eight! You know what eight percent used to mean? It meant something. Now it’s just… noise. Everyone gets excited over a little bump. It’s ridiculous. They’re selling chips that save battery life. Battery life! Like that’s some revolutionary concept. It’s the bare minimum, people!
This whole edge AI thing… it’s just a fancy way of saying they make tiny computers that don’t drain your phone as fast. It’s not curing cancer, okay? But apparently, it’s enough to send investors into a frenzy. And Garmin (GRMN 1.77%) is a customer. Garmin! The GPS people. Like that’s some kind of endorsement. They mentioned them in the IPO filing. Of course, they did. They have to justify the whole thing somehow. It’s all marketing, I tell you!
The Edge of What, Exactly?
They say they’re expanding their customer base. “Diversifying.” It’s corporate speak for “we’re scrambling to find enough people to buy this stuff.” And they’re introducing “products to enhance more complex edge AI capabilities.” More complex? What does that even mean? It sounds like they’re just adding layers of complication to something that should be simple. And they had a successful IPO and follow-on offering. More money. Wonderful. Now they have more money to spend on… more complexity.
They raised about $180 million. That’s… a lot of money to not be profitable. They admit they won’t be profitable this quarter. Of course not. Why would they be? They’re spending all that money on… you guessed it, more complexity! And people are buying this? Early adopters, they call them. Risk-takers. I call them… foolish. Look, I’m not saying it’s a terrible investment. It’s just… it’s a lot of hype for something that essentially solves a problem that shouldn’t exist in the first place. I mean, shouldn’t batteries just last? Is that too much to ask? It’s the principle of the thing. They’re making a fortune off of fixing a problem they, or someone else, created. It’s infuriating. And the stock is up eight percent. Eight! I need a coffee.
