Amazon Prime show It’s In the Game will chronicle the rise of Madden NFL

As someone who grew up playing Madden NFL on a dusty old console, I can confidently say that John Madden and his eponymous series have left an indelible mark on my gaming life. From the early days of 10-Yard Fight to the modern behemoth we know today, Madden has been a constant in my digital playground.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but feel excited about the current buzz surrounding John Madden and his namesake game series. First off, we learned that Nicolas Cage will be stepping into the shoes of this legendary coach, broadcaster, and gaming legend in an upcoming film!

Madden NFL was the sole licensed NFL football game available for purchase, a position it earned through its dominance. However, as the documentary reveals, this wasn’t always guaranteed; there were other games like 10-Yard Fight that were popular during my youth. I spent countless hours playing these games, but due to technological constraints, they bore only a passing resemblance to football.

John Madden refused to associate his name with any game that didn’t replicate genuine 11-player football, as 7-on-7 wasn’t satisfactory. His firm stance compelled Electronic Arts (EA) to find a solution. Consequently, the games of yesteryears became unacceptable to everyone after this point.

A significant portion of this presentation seems biased towards Madden, and I anticipate it will strongly favor that viewpoint. However, we caught a fleeting glimpse of Jose “Angry Joe” Vargas, who has long criticized Madden for lack of innovation. It’s possible they’ll touch upon the series’ stagnation, albeit briefly.

I share a love-hate connection with Madden, much like many long-term players do. To be honest, I wouldn’t even be discussing this topic with you without the numerous articles I’ve written about it throughout the years. However, it does require improvements and the exclusive licensing deal isn’t making things easier. But let’s save that frustration for another conversation. Keep an eye out for my thoughts on It’s In the Game in the near future.
