Prime Video will be home to a new Stargate series, announced by Amazon MGM Studios. This marks a significant step in the studio’s plan to bring back popular MGM franchises, with the new series being spearheaded by writer and producer Martin Gero.
The series is being developed by Gero, a veteran of the Stargate franchise and the creator of Blindspot. He’s taking on a major role, serving as the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the new project.
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich – the team behind the original 1994 Stargate movie – are producing the new series. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who were key figures in previous Stargate television shows, are also contributing as consultants.
Gero feels like coming back to work on Stargate is a meaningful moment, as it’s where he first started his television career. In a statement released by Amazon MGM Studios, he explained that his initial job twenty years ago was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis, and that the show fundamentally shaped his understanding of television production – it’s become a core part of how he approaches the work.
He explained that the new series is designed to appeal to both dedicated fans and people discovering it for the first time, saying, “This one is for those who have always supported us, and I guarantee newcomers will find it amazing.”
The show revolves around the Stargate, a device that opens doorways – wormholes – allowing for immediate travel to different parts of the universe.
Starting with the original movie in 1994, the Stargate franchise has expanded to include multiple TV series like Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, along with animated shows and online content. Amazon MGM Studios says they aim to respect the existing stories while also taking the franchise in exciting new directions.
Nick Pepper, who leads U.S. streaming TV development for the studio, believes the franchise is well-suited for Prime Video.
He said that Stargate is a long-lasting and popular series that people have enjoyed for many years, and they’re excited to create a new version for Prime Video viewers around the world.
The new Stargate series fits into Amazon’s plan to create shows based on popular titles from MGM, which they bought in 2022. They’re already working on a prequel to Legally Blonde, a Tomb Raider series with Sophie Turner, and a new show based on Barbershop. Other MGM franchises, like Poltergeist, are also being developed.
