The popular *Bosch* series is expanding! MGM+, which is owned by Amazon, has greenlit a new show called *Bosch: Start of Watch*. It will be a prequel, showing us how detective Harry Bosch began his career.
Cameron Monaghan, famous for his roles in *Shameless* and *Gotham*, will play a young Harry Bosch in the new series. Omari Hardwick, best known from *Power*, will play Eli Bridges, a police officer who mentors Bosch.
The new show will follow Harry Bosch when he first joins the police force in Los Angeles, years before the events of *Bosch* and *Bosch: Legacy*. Joining the story is a new character, Bridges, played by Hardwick, a hardened Vietnam War veteran who mentors Bosch as he starts his career.
Unlike earlier seasons, the new series *Start of Watch* isn’t adapted from one of Michael Connelly’s novels. However, Connelly has said the story will incorporate elements from Harry Bosch’s past, as suggested in his books. He calls the show a journey into “uncharted character territory” and is excited to reveal how Bosch developed into the person he is today.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, announced that the new series will explore the early days of detective Harry Bosch, showing how he became the character fans know and love. He believes that with Cameron Monaghan and Omari Hardwick in leading roles, ‘Bosch: Start of Watch’ will maintain the franchise’s realistic and compelling storytelling while also launching a fresh, exciting direction.
The popular *Bosch* universe is expanding with a new show, making it the fourth installment in the franchise. Following the seven-season run of the original *Bosch* on Prime Video, and the subsequent series *Bosch: Legacy* and *Ballard* (starring Maggie Q, which has been renewed for another season), *Bosch: Start of Watch* will be available on MGM+. Like previous entries, the show will be filmed in Los Angeles, and production received a significant $11.6 million tax credit from the state of California.
Michael Connelly shared his excitement about the new project, thanking Michael Wright and the MGM+ team for handling the continuation of the Bosch story with such thoughtfulness and respect. He feels it’s a wonderful opportunity to show fans how Harry Bosch evolved into the character they’ve enjoyed for ten seasons, and he’s eager to collaborate with Cameron and the writing team to develop this new direction for the character.
This new series goes back to the early 1990s, introducing a young Harry Bosch as he starts his career with the LAPD. He’s portrayed as intelligent but headstrong as he tries to establish himself. According to showrunner Tom Bernardo, the series is a great opportunity to show how the famous character and Los Angeles itself came to be, while also staying true to the spirit of the books and the original series that fans have loved for years.
Producer Henrik Bastin explained that filming in Los Angeles will ensure the show feels genuine. He believes shooting in L.A. will allow them to work with top industry professionals and finally deliver the Harry Bosch story fans have been waiting for.
The two lead actors are both experienced performers. Jeremy Strong, known for his ten seasons as Ian Gallagher on *Shameless*, has also appeared in *Gotham* and will be in the upcoming *Tron: Ares*. Omari Hardwick first gained recognition starring as Ghost in *Power*, and recently shared the screen with Michelle Yeoh in *Star Trek: Section 31*.
The new series, *Bosch: Start of Watch*, will stream on MGM+ in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, across Latin America, and in Belgium and the Netherlands.
