Amazon Axes Tomb Raider Series: Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fall from Grace!

Once more, it’s been reported that the planned live-action Tomb Raider series featuring Sophie Turner has been canceled by Amazon.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve learned that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator behind our beloved show, has faced a significant setback within the production company she’s been working with.

What are the details?

Tomb Raider dead

According to the Daily Mail’s latest report, the Tomb Raider series appears to be indefinitely postponed due to being entangled in a creative development limbo. This situation arises from Phoebe Waller-Bridge taking an extended period to complete her scripts, and when they were finally submitted, they were deemed not yet ready for filming.

Initial reports suggesting that the series may not materialize originated back in August, according to Puck News. The website claims that the scripts for the show have yet to be finalized.

Jennifer Salke fired

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: One key factor leading to the cancellation of the Tomb Raider series is the departure of Jennifer Salke from her role as head of Amazon MGM Studios. She was a strong advocate for the series and had invested significantly in its development, pouring millions of dollars into it.

According to reports, it’s been suggested that Salke may have been dismissed due to the latest James Bond agreement, as well as possible decisions concerning The Rings of Power, Citadel, and additional projects.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Amazon contract downgraded

According to the report, it appears that just before Salke stepped down, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s contract was surprisingly extended again, around the same time.

In contrast, the current contract with Waller-Bridge on Amazon differs significantly. Previously, her deal was exclusive, but now it’s on a “non-exclusive, first look basis,” which means she can work with other companies as well, and Amazon gets the first opportunity to view and potentially acquire any new projects she develops. Moreover, under her previous contract, no broadcast content has materialized so far from it.

The latest film, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” has unfortunately fallen short at the box office, incurring losses exceeding one hundred million dollars.

What about Sophie Turner?

In November, it emerged that Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, was Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s preferred choice to portray Lara Croft. Turner even donned a costume reminiscent of the character for Halloween, channeling Trinity from The Matrix with two guns.

According to reports in The Daily Mail, it appears that Lara Croft actress Alicia Turner has moved on from the Tomb Raider series and is now engaged in different endeavors. One of these projects includes a horror movie titled “The Dreadful,” where she will be working alongside her Game of Thrones colleague, Kit Harington.
