In the realm of Hollywood, there are often enduring “what-ifs” that linger (and sometimes trouble both the audience and actors), such as Will Smith pondering why he chose the part in Wild Wild West over playing Neo in The Matrix. However, a lesser-known fact for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts is that Zoe Saldaña was not originally slated to play Gamora. In a recent conversation, Amanda Seyfried disclosed that she was given the opportunity to star in the initial Guardians of the Galaxy film as Gamora but declined the offer.
On a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Amanda Seyfried discussed her decision not to accept a role. Upon receiving the offer, she pondered it for several days before declining for various reasons. One concern was the possibility that the movie might become Marvel’s first box office bomb, and she didn’t want to jeopardize her career. Additionally, the need to endure extensive makeup and prosthetics to play the green-skinned Gamora was a task Amanda Seyfried felt was too arduous.
Seyfried expressed her initial apprehension about potentially being committed and having her appearance altered for an extended period due to the time commitment. She referred to it as a significant chance, as she had recently met James for the first time and found him impressive. Despite rumors that he might have forgotten their meeting, Seyfried confirmed that she indeed received the offer. She hesitated over it for a couple of days, primarily because she didn’t want to spend six months annually in London. There was another project she was eager to work on with Seth MacFarlane titled A Million Ways to Die in the West, which also seemed appealing.
She also noted that starring in a Marvel film that doesn’t succeed isn’t beneficial for one’s career, she continued. Initially, I believed this project about a tree and a raccoon who talk would be the first Marvel flop, and I thought Chris Pratt and I would never work again in the industry. However, I was mistaken! But I was merely being cautious, not courageous.
It might seem surprising at first, but upon reflection, it fits perfectly. Prior to this, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) had been primarily focused on Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and the Avengers team – characters well-known both among comic enthusiasts and regular moviegoers. To many, including Seyfried who was less acquainted with this universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy seemed like an unusual group, sparking doubts and uncertainties.

2012 saw me gracing the silver screen in a movie that was up for Best Picture – “Les Misérables”. My career was soaring high, and then came an opportunity to be part of a film featuring a “chattering raccoon” and a “chattering tree”. Honestly, it didn’t seem like the most logical step forward according to conventional wisdom. But sometimes, the most magical stories come from unexpected places!
Absolutely, it’s common knowledge that the film “Guardians of the Galaxy” turned out to be a hit, spawning its own series within a broader franchise. Subsequently, Gamora appeared in major productions such as “Avengers: Endgame.” Frankly, it’s tough to envision anyone else embodying that role other than Zoe Saldaña. Seyfried herself has stated that she has no regrets about her choice, and her career has flourished since then. However, we can’t help but ponder what her portrayal of Gamora might have been like within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
