Amaarae Ascends on Boundless ‘BLACK STAR’

Summary

  • Amaarae’s third studio album is here, BLACK STAR
  • The 13-song project features PinkPantheress, Naomi Campbell, Zacari, and more
  • Infused with Ghanaian sonic and aesthetic influence, BLACK STAR, per Amaarae, is dedicated to “the alternative youth of Ghana”

For some time now, Amaarae’s talent has been captivating, first gaining widespread attention with her hit single “Fluid” in 2017. Nearly a decade on, the Ghanaian-American artist continues to be influenced by her versatility – encompassing genre, gender identity, fashion sense, and sound design – perhaps even more so than before. This is evident in her third studio album, BLACK STAR.

On her captivating 13-song album, Amaarae fuses the sounds of her Ghanaian heritage with global rhythms, blending amapiano, Afrobeats, along with other local styles such as ghettotech, house, techno, and baile funk. The influence of the digital age is also evident throughout the album, with hypnotic synths and dance-inducing breaks appearing at just the right moments to create a dreamy atmosphere.

As a proud representative of Ghana’s vibrant, forward-thinking youth, I’d say my latest LP transcends borders and speaks directly to us. It’s an anthem, a testament to our spirit, a declaration that we’ve arrived on the global stage. This chapter in my journey is all about validating our presence, asserting ourselves, and proving our worth. We’re here, we’re strong, and we’re ready to shine!

If Afropop’s future is in Amaarae’s care, then we’re in excellent shape indeed.
