On the Late Night with Seth Meyers, which aired on September 26, 2024, the actress who stars in Emily the Criminal shared anecdotes about Patti LuPone and reminisced about a particularly harrowing experience from her past.
In conversation with host Seth Meyers, Plaza reminisced about her past living arrangement and theatrical collaboration with LuPone during their off-Broadway performance in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.
Last year, while acting in a play, the actress who starred in “Dirty Grandpa” became ill. It was then that LuPone proposed a remedy, but unfortunately, it nearly proved fatal for Plaza.
Aubrey Plaza mentioned that LuPone had spoken of a unique caregiver named Joe, who visits at night.
While Patti LuPone attended an event, as instructed by her, it was the nurse who carried out the tasks that LuPone had discussed with Plaza regarding her role in the Company.
The White Lotus actress explained, “He arrived and provided assistance for me, and he mentioned, ‘I’ll merely offer you some vitamins and similar items.’
According to Aubrey Plaza’s account, Joe, the nurse, inquired whether she preferred the “Patti Special,” a treatment that promotes effortless sleep. Aubrey Plaza consented to this option.
After receiving an injection of Benadryl, Plaza commented, “I assumed it would be similar to the children’s version that makes one drowsy, but when Benadryl is administered intravenously, it felt more like a powerful horse tranquilizer to me.
Until Patti LuPone made her entrance, I found myself temporarily speechless. During our performance on the show, I attempted to emulate a slurred tone to simulate a conversation with the actress from Life Goes On.
Apart from mentioning this, Plaza also explained that she felt perspiring even though she was simultaneously chilly and hot. In her own words, “I asked Joe if I was okay, if I would pull through, and he reassured me, saying, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.'” This is what Plaza remembered of the situation.
Given the state she was in, even renowned actress Patti LuPone felt a tad frightened and offered her a peanut butter English muffin. As The School for Good and Evil star pushed the muffin into Plaza’s mouth, they both settled down in the living room, as recounted by the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World actress later on.
