They’re spending money on artificial intelligence. A lot of it. Enough to make a sane person question the definition of “need.” It’s become a part of the economy, like taxes and disappointment. Most businesses seem to think these new tools will help them make more money and avoid work. So it goes.
Investors, naturally, are twitching. They want a piece of the action, a little slice of the digital future. It’s understandable. Everyone wants to feel like they’re on the right side of history, even if history is just a series of increasingly efficient ways to sell things.
A Comprehensive Opportunity, If You Must
If you’re determined to put your money into this whole AI business, and many people are, you could do worse than Alphabet (GOOGL 1.08%) (GOOG 1.08%). They’re involved in pretty much everything. It’s a bit unsettling, really, how much control one company can accumulate. But then, unsettling is the new normal.
They have DeepMind, which is building artificial brains. They’re also making their own computer chips, which they call Tensor Processing Units. Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? Then there’s Google Cloud, which recently reported a 48% jump in revenue. That’s a lot of growth, fueled by people wanting AI to do things for them. And a 30% operating margin, which means someone is getting rich.
Alphabet also has all those apps we use every day, and they’re stuffing AI into them. Their Gemini app has 750 million users. That’s a lot of people willingly handing over their data. And their advertising customers, who provide 72% of Alphabet’s revenue, are using AI to target us more effectively. It’s a beautiful, terrifying system.
The stock currently trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 28.8. It’s not cheap. But, if you believe in the relentless march of technology, and many people do, it might be worth a look. There will be earnings growth, of course. There always is. Until there isn’t. So it goes.
