Actress Brooke Shields is preparing to return to the location where her fame began, as she stars in a humorous adaptation of “The Blue Lagoon” titled “Almost Paradise.” This upcoming multi-camera sitcom is being created by Danny Zuker, a writer from “Modern Family,” and produced by Aaron Kaplan’s production company, Kapital Entertainment. Joining Shields on this project is David Spade, a former cast member of “Saturday Night Live.
Written by Zuker, Almost Paradise is characterized as a fusion of The Blue Lagoon and Gilligan’s Island. This sitcom revolves around a typical married couple who find themselves dealing with the challenges of living on an uninhabited island for years – essentially, a family-friendly comedy take on the storyline of The Blue Lagoon.
The project originated at a shared meeting between Shields and Kaplan, with Spade subsequently becoming part of the team. It’s worth noting that Shields had previously appeared as a guest star in Spade’s NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me!, where Zuker was also involved, serving as a consultant and co-executive producer. While no official agreements have been signed yet, both Shields and Spade have participated in the development phase and pitch sessions. If the project progresses, they are likely to assume the main roles of Brooke and David, assuming their schedules allow it.
Previously focused on single-camera comedies, the network is now taking steps into multi-camera sitcoms by commissioning two scripts for “Almost Paradise,” a move that aligns with their renewed interest in this format. Notably, they have worked with Spade, Kaplan, and Zuker in the past on shows like “Snake Oil” and “HouseBroken.” Additionally, Shields, who was the lead in NBC’s multi-camera sitcom “Suddenly Susan,” also has a history with this genre.
Almost Paradise might see Shields and Spade taking the lead roles, possibly signaling Fox’s reentry into the realm of multi-camera comedies. If given the go-ahead, this show aims to offer a novel, humorous perspective on survival tales, skillfully combining nostalgic elements with a modern, witty twist.
