At the 2024 D23 Expo, Disney revealed numerous films scheduled for future release. With an abundance of titles, the studio has been steadily planning ahead, as it also manages Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel productions. Furthermore, movies under the umbrella company have generated considerable excitement. Here are the upcoming films Disney plans to release.

Moana 2

Eight years from now, Disney’s sequel to the animated film Moana will be released in cinemas. In this continuation, titled Moana 2, audiences can join Moana and Maui on another exciting sea journey. Auli’i Cravalho will continue to play Moana, while Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui.

Mufasa: The Lion King

Mufasa: The Lion King is an eagerly awaited Disney production, as it’s being helmed by director Barry Jenkins. This forthcoming animated musical, centering around the character of Mufasa, is penned from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson, inspired by the epic tale of The Lion King.

A number of celebrities such as Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John Kani, Seth Rogen, Donald Glover, Mads Mikkelsen, and others are set to contribute their voices for the movie, along with Blue Ivy Carter and her mom Beyoncé. The film, titled “Mufasa: The Lion King,” is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 20.

Snow White

In a recent announcement, Snow White, previously in the spotlight, is now overshadowed by Rachel Zegler who will star as Snow White, while Gal Gadot takes on the role of the Wicked Queen in the upcoming movie adaptation. It’s also been reported that Andrew Burnap has joined the cast for the live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, though he will portray an entirely original character.

As a devoted follower, I’m excited to share that Marc Webb, known for directing films like “500 Days of Summer” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” is at the helm of an upcoming movie. This film is scripted by Greta Gerwig, renowned for her work on “Barbie,” in collaboration with Erin Cressida Wilson and Dorothy Ann Blank. The captivating tale of Snow White will hit theaters on March 21st of next year.

Elio

In a fresh take from Pixar, the upcoming animated movie titled “Elio” is captivating for multiple reasons. Notably, Yonas Kibrea lends his voice to the lead character Elio, with an impressive ensemble cast joining him. This star-studded group includes Zoe Saldaña, Jameela Jamil, and Brad Garrett.

I, an eager follower, am thrilled to share that Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian, and Adrian Molina are set to guide us through an exhilarating sci-fi adventure. This tale chronicles the extraordinary journey of a character named Elio as he establishes contact with extraterrestrial beings, following an incredible incident where he was transported aboard their spacecraft. Tron: Ares

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that one movie I’ve got my eyes on is Tron: Ares. This upcoming production hails from the esteemed house of Disney. The helm for this exciting project will be taken by Joachim Rønning, who has previously steered Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and more recently, Young Woman and the Sea. I can’t wait to see what magic he weaves with Tron: Ares!

In the upcoming movie “Tron: Ares,” set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025, Jared Leto will take center stage, with Cameron Monaghan, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, and Greta Lee providing strong supporting roles.

Zootopia 2

The animated comedy “Zootopia,” created by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, received exceptional reviews from critics and proved to be an enormous financial success. At last, Disney has confirmed that a sequel is in development for this hit series, which was announced during the D23 Expo.

Actor Ke Huy Quan, who plays Loki in its second season, has been added to the cast of Zootopia 2. Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin will reprise their roles from the original movie. Jared Bush is responsible for writing and directing the sequel, set to hit theaters on November 26, 2025.

This live-action retelling focuses on the unique bond between a solitary girl named Lilo and an extraterrestrial named Stitch. Get ready for this heartwarming tale when Lilo & Stitch graces the big screen in the Summer of 2025.

Toy Story 5

The Toy Story series is growing with a fresh addition, namely Toy Story 5. Despite Toy Story 4 seemingly concluding the storyline, it appears that Disney isn’t ready to let go of this successful franchise as they have already verified that a fifth installment is in the works, with Andrew Stanton set to take the director’s chair.

As your trusted lifestyle guide, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Tim Allen will once again lend his voice to everyone’s favorite space ranger, Buzz Lightyear, while the legendary Tom Hanks returns as Woody in the highly-anticipated Toy Story movie. Although plot details are being kept under lock and key, Disney has revealed that the film is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026. Can’t wait for this cinematic adventure!

Moana

In a shift from the animated series, the live-action adaptation of Moana (not to be confused with Moana 2) has generated significant excitement, particularly due to Catherine Laga‘aia taking over the title role from Auli’i Carvalho. Despite this change, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will reprise his character as Maui.

In this upcoming film scheduled for a July 10, 2026 release, John Tui takes on the role of Moana’s father, Chief Tui, while Frankie Adams portrays her mother Sina and Rena Owen plays her grandmother Tala. The movie will be directed by Thomas Kail.

Frozen 3

Jennifer Lee, the head of the Frozen franchise, has shared that both Frozen 3 and the fourth film are being worked on concurrently, as she spoke with Fandango post the D23 announcement. The Frozen saga is set to carry on beyond Frozen 3, with the third movie slated for a theater release on November 24, 2027. At this point, specifics about the film’s storyline remain undisclosed.

Upcoming Disney movies without a release date

Disney seems to be developing several movies, but the specific release dates are still under wraps. One of these films appears to be a live-action version of The Aristocats. There’s speculation that Emma Stone, an Academy Award winner, might reprise her role as the title villain in Cruella 2, although this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

It’s being reported that a real-life adaptation of Hercules is rumored to be in its preliminary stages, with Guy Ritchie slated as the director, while the Russo Brothers will be involved on the production side. The specifics of this upcoming film remain undisclosed for now. Meanwhile, there’s buzz surrounding a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, with whispers that Disney is planning two separate movies in the franchise: one featuring Margot Robbie from Barbie and another potential revival without the original series’ star, Johnny Depp, who seems unlikely to participate in the reboot.

It’s rumored that Whoopi Goldberg’s comedy Sister Act 3 will only be available for streaming on Disney+. Additionally, a reboot of Three Men and a Baby featuring Zac Efron might also premiere on the platform. However, as for the Untitled Tower of Terror movie starring Scarlett Johansson, which was said to be in development in 2021, there haven’t been any recent updates regarding its progress.
