As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for pop culture and a deep appreciation for the intricacies of storytelling, I find myself both fascinated and slightly overwhelmed by the Alien franchise’s complex chronology. Having traversed the labyrinthine timeline of this sci-fi classic numerous times, I can confidently say that it’s not for the faint-hearted or the casual viewer.
Originating in the 1970s, the Alien movie franchise, renowned in the realm of science fiction, remains vibrant today, with the upcoming film Alien: Romulus set to add another chapter. Confusingly, the Alien series and its offshoots have a complex timeline, made more so by Prometheus, which left some viewers unsure of its connection to Alien. Alien: Romulus might introduce even more complexity to the continuity, but it could potentially offer a new beginning for the franchise.
The Prometheus Duology marks the beginning of the Alien franchise’s timeline
In 2012, the movie Prometheus was launched, marking the start of the Alien series, 30 years after the initial Alien film. Set before the events of Alien: Romulus, it tells the tale of a spacecraft’s crew who uncover clues about human origins while also encountering the Engineers, a race of extraterrestrial beings resembling humans, who pose a threat to humanity. The narrative unfolds from 2089 and concludes in 2093.
In this movie, the storyline shares a universe with the Alien series, subtly tied to the Weyland Corporation. Yet, it’s only at the end that the mystery unfolds – Dr. Elizabeth Shaw’s genetically-altered child impregnates an Engineer, spawning a prehistoric form of the classic Xenomorphs seen in the Alien films. Initially, the link between this film and Alien may not be apparent.
The storyline of this prequel series carried on from the 2017 movie, Alien: Covenant. Set 11 years after the events of Prometheus, this film unveiled that the advanced Xenomorphs were meticulously created by none other than David, a human-like android previously seen in the earlier film. However, the film’s ending left many questions unanswered, particularly about the crashed Engineer spacecraft from the original Alien. At present, this is the most recent movie in the Alien series, and it remains uncertain if a direct sequel will be produced that connects to the later films in the franchise.
The Classic Alien Series is set less than two decades after the Prometheus films
1. In the year 2122, set 18 years after Alien: Covenant and before Alien: Romulus, the story of the first Alien film unfolds. The crew of the Nostromo, led by main character Ellen Ripley, encounter Xenomorphs when one infects its host, causing a series of deadly attacks. Meanwhile, Weyland-Yutani, a corporation that merged since Prometheus, aims to acquire a Xenomorph sample for their sinister plans. Additionally, Engineers arrive at LV-426 and leave behind several Xenomorph eggs.
The narrative progresses in “Aliens,” set in the year 2179. A leap in time and Ripley’s unchanged age are attributed to her spending that period in cryogenic slumber. Notably, LV-426 has transformed into a colony during this time gap. Regrettably, an army of Xenomorphs is revived, compelling Ripley and a team of soldiers to confront them.
In the year 2179, both the original Alien movie and its sequel, Alien 3, unfolded. The closing scene of the second film revealed that Ripley, who had become the host for the young Xenomorph queen, self-destructed in an attempt to eradicate the species completely. The fourth installment, titled Alien: Resurrection, is set 202 years later, specifically in the year 2381. This film focuses on a clone of Ellen Ripley.
Researchers have produced identical copies of Ripley and the Xenomorphs utilizing genuine blood specimens from the original Ripley. In this new version, a genetically altered Xenomorph queen gives birth to a hybrid that resembles a human. As the cloned Ripley and the crew aboard Auriga encounter these offspring during their journey to Earth, this marks the latest installment in the Alien saga. Despite the release of the new film Alien: Romulus, the sequence of events remains consistent within the series’ original timeline.
When does Alien: Romulus take place?
“Alien: Romulus” – The Seventh Installment of the Alien Franchise:
Romulus” is a standalone movie in the Alien series and won’t directly link to the first Alien film or movies like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Its success depends on its performance at the box office since Alien: Covenant didn’t do well. The title, “Alien: Romulus,” is inspired by mythology, much like “Prometheus.” If it’s successful, there could be direct sequels that connect more closely to the events of “Aliens.” Also, a comic book prequel for “Alien: Romulus” will come out later in 2024.
