As a seasoned gamer who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, I must admit that the announcement of the limited edition VHS release of “Alien: Romulus” has filled my nostalgia tank to the brim! The mere thought of popping a tape into my trusty VCR brings back memories of late-night horror movie marathons with friends and the thrill of discovering new worlds through these classic films.
The upcoming film from the Alien franchise, titled Alien: Romulus, is set to be released as a limited-edition VHS on December 3rd. This surprise move comes at a time when physical media like DVDs and CDs are finding it challenging to thrive in the market. Instead, this VHS release seems to capitalize more on nostalgia rather than innovation. It’s a celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Alien series.
In the ’80s and ’90s, film directors Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and David Fincher initially released their iconic Alien films on VHS tapes. This format has a special nostalgia attached to it. The limited-edition VHS versions will retain the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio, similar to other VHS tapes. Matt Ferguson, an accomplished movie poster artist, designed the packaging art for these VHS releases.
At the dual screening of Alien and Alien: Resurrection hosted by Beyond Fest and the American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre, director Fede Álvarez delivered a video message. In this message, Álvarez mentioned that it had been more than a decade since a major studio released a VHS tape, with David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, which came out in 2005 and was re-released on VHS in 2006.
After the screening concluded, there was a question-and-answer session involving David Jonsson, Isabela Merced, Shane Mahan, Matt Ferguson, and Lee Gilmore. The discussion was overseen by Jim Hemphill, who is a film historian and writer for IndieWire. In the movie, David Jonsson portrays character Andy, while Isabela Merced takes on the role of Kay. Shane Mahan served as the visual effects supervisor, and Lee Gilmore was the supervising sound editor.
If you’re more of a physical media enthusiast but not particularly fond of VHS tapes, don’t fret! A 4K Steelbook and Blu-ray/DVD set will be available on Dec 3 as well. These releases will feature bonus content such as interviews with directors Fede Alvarez and Ridley Scott, behind-the-scenes material, and additional and extended scenes.
If you’re keen on catching the second-highest earning movie in the Alien series from the comfort of your home immediately, you can rent or buy it on streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.
