‘Alien: Romulus’ Director Defends the Film’s Most Controversial Moment

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that my initial excitement for Alien: Romulus was through the roof. The return to the original timeline, the positive reviews, and the box office success were all indicators of a fantastic addition to the series. However, one controversial decision left me scratching my head – the appearance of Ian Holm’s replica in the movie.

The Alien series that we all know and love today was originally conceived by the late writer Dan O’Bannon and his partner Ronald Shusett. They were responsible for crafting the original story, which would eventually become one of the most acclaimed science fiction and horror films ever made. It was Ridley Scott who catapulted the franchise into stardom with his iconic Alien movie, and as you’re fully aware, the rest is nothing short of cinematic history.

After that point, the franchise has expanded its cosmos and delved into its origins. However, the latest installment, the ongoing “Alien: Romulus,” which was released on August 16, 2024, is set between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” and revisits the original timeline of the universe. This film serves as a sequel to the first “Alien.”

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the response to this film has been overwhelmingly positive – people can’t seem to get enough of it! The cash keeps rolling in, and both fans and critics are generally wowed by what they’ve seen. However, there was one scene that stirred up some controversy, leaving many fans feeling a bit shocked and uncomfortable. That’s why the director, Fede Álvarez, felt compelled to address it.

It’s possible that you’re already aware, but just in case, we’re referring to the reappearance of “Ian Holm” in the series. In Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie, he portrayed Ash, an android, although his character wasn’t particularly noble. However, Ash became a beloved figure and a defining symbol for the franchise.

As a longtime fan of the Alien franchise, I have to admit that when I first heard about the release of “Alien: Resurrection” and learned that Ian Holm was reprising his role as Ash, I was thrilled. Having grown up watching Ridley Scott’s original Alien, I had always felt a sense of nostalgia for the characters and world of that film.

The decision to include a replica of Ian Holm’s character in the film sparked debate, but director Alvarez clarified the reasoning behind it.

In our attempt, we weren’t striving to mimic the unique acting prowess of another individual, as this character is distinct. They share a similar physical appearance but that’s where the similarity ends. We had planned to develop an animatronic figure, and later add CGI enhancements for the mouth and eyes in certain shots. The question then arose: What face should it have? Who does it resemble? Among the possibilities, we found Ian Holm, who hadn’t been seen before, particularly intriguing.

As a game enthusiast speaking here, I can confirm that we’ve reached out to Holm’s wife, and she graciously granted us permission, feeling confident that her beloved husband would have been thrilled to join our cinematic journey.
