For decades, the creatures in the *Alien* movies have always been portrayed as simple, terrifying killers – much like the shark in *Jaws*, but even scarier. They seemed driven only by the need to kill and reproduce. However, the recent series *Alien: Earth* suggests there might be more to these Xenomorphs than we realized. In the season finale, we see Wendy/Marcy, a unique hybrid with a robotic body and human mind, actually controlling a newly born Xenomorph, almost like a pet. She can communicate with it and give it commands, though it doesn’t have a friendly name…at least not yet.
Earlier in the season, Wendy (Sydney Chandler) discovered she could communicate with the newborn Xenomorph held at Prodigy’s research facility. But the second-to-last episode revealed she can do much more than just talk to the alien-she can give it commands. She asked the Xenomorph to protect her and her friends from an incoming military attack, and it violently eliminated the soldiers. Wendy seems to be able to communicate by mimicking the specific sounds the Xenomorphs use, and this particular creature clearly likes and obeys her.
The season ended with a clear demonstration that Wendy’s control over the Xenomorph wasn’t a fluke. Throughout the finale, the alien acts like a devoted pet, closely following Wendy and the Lost Boys – though it’s more like a fiercely loyal guard dog. The Xenomorph completely obeys her commands, even shadowing her like a puppy, albeit a dangerous one with acidic blood and a deadly bite. It aggressively attacks and eliminates any soldiers who try to approach, simply needing a signal from Wendy to unleash its fury.
By the end of the episode, Wendy and the other hybrid children have managed to imprison Boy Kavalier and the scientists from Prodigy. A Xenomorph circles their cell, moving along the walls like a predator about to strike. We’ve seen how dangerous this alien is in previous films, but this is the first time it’s shown any connection to another living being. Perhaps the hybrids, being technically not fully alive, don’t register as potential hosts or food. Or maybe the Xenomorph has always been waiting for someone to communicate with it, as Wendy and Marcy are now doing. It makes you wonder if someone should have told Ellen Ripley to just treat it like a pet, like she did with her cat, Jones.
The *Alien* movies show the Xenomorphs only as creatures that reproduce and attack. But the one in this series seemed to develop a connection with Wendy, which is unusual. Could she be a human-Xenomorph hybrid, or even a Queen? The later *Alien* films don’t show the creatures as intelligent or capable of following orders, except from their Queen. It remains to be seen how this new development in the relationship between Xenomorphs and hybrids will unfold in future seasons, if there are any. We’re hoping to find out!
The entire first season of FX’s Alien: Earth is now available to stream on Hulu.
