In the show “Alien: Earth”, created by Noah Hawley, we’ve encountered four unique extraterrestrial species other than the iconic Xenomorph. However, after watching four episodes, it seems that the Xeno, famously designed by H.R. Giger, may have been surpassed in terror factor by a new creature. Interestingly, this terrifying being resides within the body of an ominous sheep. Yes, you heard correctly-a sheep. This foreboding sheep caught our attention as a potential breakout star when the series trailer was released, but we didn’t fully grasp the sheer terror it embodied until its appearance in episode four.
The most unsettling new extraterrestrial lifeform discovered by the Weyland-Yutani vessel Maginot goes by the name “the octopus eye” or T. Ocellus officially. In the early episodes, we witnessed its terrifying behavior as it plucked out a cat’s eye from its socket and hijacked its cerebral functions. The fourth episode showed Prodigy CEO Boy Kavalier carrying a sacrificial sheep into his lab, only for the T. Ocellus to snatch the sheep’s eye and take control of the animal. Prodigy synth Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) is already aware that this creature is highly intelligent, making its giant, gory eyeball all the more unsettling.
Introducing an alien with self-awareness and problem-solving abilities would mark a significant shift for this series. Unlike the Xenomorph, while it demonstrates intelligence for a creature, there’s no evidence suggesting it possesses self-awareness or sentience. Its actions are driven by instinct, such as its relentless drive to reproduce at any cost. Although it may be labeled the “perfect organism,” it lacks the ability to solve mathematical equations. However, if the alien with an octopus eye implanted in a lamb exhibits signs of sentience, that would introduce a terrifying new dimension the franchise has yet to explore – potentially one more menacing than the Xenomorph.
In episode four of the series Alien: Earth, the chilling moment when an octopus eye takes control and slaughters a sheep is downright terrifying. This scene stands out even in a franchise known for its gruesome body horror scenes. Despite being an animal, it’s still a masterful display of body horror. The malevolent gaze it emits after taking over the sheep recalls sinister animals from previous horror films like Black Phillip from The Witch. When it fixes its deadly stare on the Prodigy scientists, it exudes pure destructive intent.
In our current assessment, it’s uncertain for how long an octopus eye will remain alive within the deceased sheep. However, it’s unlikely that its presence would be as chilling if it were to somehow transfer into a human. Other frightening extraterrestrial entities such as the orchid, “blood bugs,” and flies might eventually surpass it in terms of terror factor as the series unfolds. For now, the eye octopus residing within the sheep’s skull is stealing the limelight on Alien: Earth. The way it gazes at the camera with a distinct air of disappointment will linger in our memories for some time.
