‘Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts Is Reportedly Getting an Origin Story Movie

As a long-time fan who has watched Alice in Wonderland countless times, I must say I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming movie focusing on the Queen of Hearts‘ backstory! Growing up with Verna Felton’s iconic voice and later appreciating Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal, it’s exciting to see this character get the limelight she deserves.

As a gamer immersed in the magical world of Disney, I can’t help but be captivated by the Queen of Hearts. With her striking red, black, and gold attire adorned with heart and playing card themes, she truly stands out among the animated villains. Her iconic catchphrase, “Off with their heads!”, continues to echo in my memory, solidifying her as a memorable character in the Disney Villains roster.

Initially introduced in 1951 by Verna Felton, this character served as the primary antagonist in Disney’s animated adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland”. Fast forward almost seven decades, and she resurfaced in Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action “Alice in Wonderland” under the name Iracebeth, or the Red Queen. This character is a fusion of two characters from Lewis Carroll’s original books: the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts.

Currently, it’s being said that a fresh movie delving into the backstory of the Queen of Hearts is rumored to be under development, with Julia Hart taking on both writing and directing duties. At this point, specifics are still limited, but reports from Daniel Ritchman indicate that this film won’t share continuity with Disney’s previous two live-action adaptations of Alice in Wonderland.

In 2010, the version of “Alice in Wonderland” proved to be a massive hit, earning an impressive $1.025 billion worldwide. In North America alone, it made $334.1 million, while another $691.2 million was generated from other regions. This film was produced with a budget of $200 million and ended up being the second highest-grossing movie of that year, also ranking among the top earners in cinema history.

Due to the movie’s impressive performance, it comes as no shock that Disney plans to produce another film based on the beloved tale of Alice in Wonderland.
