Alex Ross, a famous artist known for his work on Green Lantern, seems to have reacted to the negative response to DC Studios’ Lanterns series – and he did it without saying anything at all.
After the first trailer for Green Lantern was released, fans on X (formerly Twitter) noticed that Ryan Reynolds had shared some older Green Lantern artwork. Many think this wasn’t a random act and that there’s a connection to the new trailer.
The artwork showcases Ross’s well-known style of drawing Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, capturing the bright green energy, vast scope, and inspiring visuals that fans love about the character.
After the first look at the Lanterns trailer, artist Alex Ross shared some of his classic Green Lantern designs on X (formerly Twitter).
The new images showcase what many fans felt was lacking in the initial trailer: vibrant green energy creations, epic space battles, and the grand scope of the Green Lantern universe and its heroes.
Ross is widely recognized as a key artist for the character, celebrated for his detailed, painting-like approach and his respect for traditional comic book art.

Fans Think The Posts Are A Subtle Message
Fans quickly picked up on the timing.
Some believe Ross was quietly reminding people what Green Lantern is supposed to look like.
I was scrolling through X and saw a post from MastaMunsta saying it sounds like Alex Ross isn’t too happy with the show, haha. Apparently, he’s pretty upset!
Fans online have been critical of the trailer, noting the absence of prominent displays of ring power, the lack of bright green energy effects, and a generally smaller scope than many anticipated.
The movie centers on a down-to-earth investigation happening on Earth, following the stories of Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.

Lanterns Trailer Continues To Draw Criticism
The teaser for Lanterns sparked mixed reactions when it debuted earlier this week.
Some people enjoyed the acting and the show’s moody, True Detective-like atmosphere, but others felt it didn’t include enough of the classic Green Lantern features fans expect.
As a longtime movie fan, I’ve been reading a lot of chatter online, and people are noticing some interesting things about the new film. It seems like they’re really pulling back on the big, flashy superpowers we’ve seen before, and there’s way less of that signature green color. Overall, it looks like they’re aiming for a more realistic and down-to-earth take on the story’s mythology, which is a pretty big shift!
People have playfully started calling the show “New Country for Old Lanterns” because it feels like a crime drama.
Lanterns is currently scheduled to premiere on HBO in August 2026.
