Even though the BAFTA Film Awards are over, some funny and awkward moments from the show are still popular online. One highlight involved actor Paul Mescal, who was playfully called out by host Alan Cumming.
Mescal, nominated for his role in the film Hamnet, was looking at his phone and didn’t notice Cumming was speaking to him. Just as Cumming was about to announce the next award, he jokingly said, “Paul, Paul, oh, he is on his phone!” Mescal looked up, surprised, and Cumming added, “You were supposed to do the gag!” The actor laughed and covered his face, clearly embarrassed, while the audience cheered.
Paul Mescal wasn’t the only celebrity put on the spot during the show. Kylie Jenner, who flew to London to support Timothée Chalamet, seemed uncomfortable when the host, Alan Cumming, turned his attention to them during a segment featuring British snacks.
Cumming approached the couple with a basket of treats, first offering them Scampi Fries, then making a playful, suggestive joke aimed at Jenner. He asked if she’d ever “had your gums around a giant Jamie Dodger,” a comment that clearly didn’t impress her.
Although she politely mouthed “Thank you” after accepting the biscuit, you could feel the awkwardness in the room. Chalamet, sitting next to her, forced a smile as the host moved on to other guests.
The awards show delivered a major upset when Timothée Chalamet lost Best Actor to Robert Aramayo. Aramayo’s win for his performance in I Swear was unexpected, as he beat out both Chalamet, who starred in Marty Supreme, and the well-established actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
The victory was deeply emotional for the 33-year-old, with his parents visibly moved and crying tears of joy as his name was called. In a modest acceptance speech, Aramayo expressed his disbelief at winning, while also recognizing the skill of the other nominees.
He specifically remembered a significant lecture Ethan Hawke gave at Juilliard years ago. He explained that Hawke’s advice about taking care of yourself and avoiding harmful habits had profoundly affected everyone present, making this win particularly meaningful.
The evening also showcased Irish acting prowess, with Jessie Buckley winning Best Actress for her role as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet. Her performance as the playwright’s wife has been widely praised throughout the awards season.
Buckley’s win confirms her position as a leading actress in contemporary film and adds to the film’s reputation as a significant artistic work. Despite some playful teasing from Alan Cumming, Paul Mescal continues to be one of the most in-demand actors following his breakthrough in Normal People.
