After His Latest Horror Hit, Zach Cregger Targets DC Movie Featuring Notable Villains

Zach Cregger is currently experiencing a notable peak in his career. His latest horror movie titled “Weapons” has recently been released in cinemas, and it’s already receiving acclaim as one of the top horror films of the year.

The movie is currently soaring with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the buzz around it has been steadily increasing throughout the week. It’s projected to have a successful opening at the box office, and the studio producing it (New Line) appears keen on continuing their collaboration.

Cregger, a highly sought-after and well-compensated filmmaker of his time, shows no signs of slowing down. This autumn, he’s off to Prague to take on the directorial role for the Resident Evil movie produced by Sony.

This fresh take on the franchise deviates significantly from the seven preceding films. Based on reports from someone who’s read the script penned jointly by Cregger and Shay Hatten, it promises a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller reminiscent of the original video games. The narrative unfolds around a main character embarking on a perilous trek from one place to another, encountering hordes of zombies along the way.

After completing that task, Cregger is eager to progress with a top-secret sci-fi venture he’s penned. However, the idea that’s generating the most online excitement recently is Henchmen, a concept developed for DC Studios which he wrote prior to his 2022 smash hit Barbarian. Cregger himself has referred to it as “my favorite script I’ve ever written.“.

The narrative revolves around a minor thug from Gotham City who unexpectedly gains recognition by seemingly defeating Batman through sheer chance. While Batman’s presence will be limited in the film, both Harley Quinn and the Joker play significant roles. Reports indicate that DC has taken note of Cregger’s desire to produce this movie, but he hasn’t formally proposed it yet.

In the current movie universe, significant challenges remain. The DC films haven’t finalized the actors for Joker and Batman yet. Additionally, there’s a question mark about if Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn.

Furthermore, James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC are taking great care with Batman-related projects, particularly since Matt Reeves is currently engaged with “The Batman Part II” featuring Robert Pattinson, and potentially a Part III as well. They aim to avoid having villains that appear in Reeves’ films also showing up in the new DC Universe to prevent any overlap.

By the way, “The Batman Part II” is planning for filming in the spring. Prior to that, Robert Pattinson is anticipated to shoot a part in “Dune: Part III.

For Cregger, the success of Resident Evil will greatly determine his future. If Resident Evil becomes a success, it could pave the way for Henchmen and other major projects he has in mind. With Weapons already receiving acclaim from both critics and audiences, Cregger’s career trajectory is hard to overlook. Whether it’s zombies, sci-fi, or Gotham’s criminal underworld, it appears that the next few years will be a busy period for Cregger.
