As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve quietly wrapped up a new movie, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! This masterpiece features the legendary Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight. We shot this film amidst the stunning landscapes of Greece in 2023. The project is shrouded in a period drama that delves into the complex relationship between a father and son. Joining me on this incredible journey is the talented Israeli filmmaker Yariv Horovoitz, renowned for his work on “Rock the Kasbah.” I can hardly wait to bring this heartfelt story to life on the big screen!
Following an eight-year absence from the Hollywood scene, filmmaker Bryan Singer is set to return to the director’s chair once more. Notably, Singer last helmed a significant Hollywood production back in 2017 when he was let go from “Bohemian Rhapsody.
As a die-hard movie lover, I’ve noticed that my favorite director has been largely absent from the silver screen lately. This absence can be attributed mainly to a series of controversies surrounding past allegations of inappropriate behavior and a string of professional roadblocks that have left studios wary about collaborating with him.
I’ve had the opportunity to view the completed version and I’m not directly involved in its creation, but let me tell you, this movie is exceptionally crafted with a strong possibility for award recognition. However, be prepared for some intense responses due to its thought-provoking subject matter.
The tale unfolds in the Middle East around the late ’70s or early ’80s, during Israel’s occupation of Lebanon. Notably, it portrays Israel in a negative light and might stir controversy. A different source involved with the production reveals that the movie chronicles an architect on his quest for atonement.
Singer boasts an extensive career of producing financially successful films, with notable works like the “X-Men” series and others that have amassed billions at the box office and garnered numerous Oscars for actors such as Kevin Spacey and Christopher McQuarrie for their work in “The Usual Suspects.” Despite facing personal scandals, he was admired as a unique director who could seamlessly blend commercially successful projects with auteur-style filmmaking.
Despite long-standing accusations of sexual misconduct, his career has been tainted since the 1990s. In 1997, two underage boys brought a civil suit against him due to an incident involving nudity during the filming of “Apt Pupil.” Over time, more allegations surfaced. However, Singer has never been criminally charged and consistently denies any involvement with minors in a sexual context.
During the peak of the #MeToo movement, an extensive report about Singer’s career was published by The Atlantic in 2019. This report significantly impacted his professional life.
Simultaneously, he was let go from “Bohemian Rhapsody” due to frequent absences and unruly behavior on set, which is rarely seen in a movie that’s already being filmed. Additionally, there were allegations that he created issues while working on the “X-Men” series as well.
Following these contentious incidents, Singer aimed to re-establish himself in conventional filmmaking. He took up an $80 million remake of the ’80s action movie “Red Sonja” for Millennium Films. Initially, the company stood by him, but later, he was let go when he couldn’t find a domestic distributor.
According to reports, it’s predicted that his latest movie will soon secure a domestic distribution deal. Internationally, the film is slated to be showcased at the Toronto Film Festival market for potential buyers. It was earlier mentioned that Singer had been attempting to present three films with an Israel setting to potential investors. After parting ways with WME, he has been working independently in Israel without representation by an agent.
Following an eight-year absence from Hollywood’s limelight, this upcoming movie signifies Bryan Singer’s initial return to prominent movie production. With Jon Voight involved and a storyline that may stir up debates, the film could rekindle discussions about the Israeli presence in Lebanon while also positioning Singer for potential award recognition once again.
