Shirley Curry, widely known as ‘Skyrim Grandma,’ has announced she’s stepping away from Bethesda’s famous RPG Skyrim after 15 years of sharing her character’s adventures online. She says this time, she’s genuinely retiring from creating Skyrim content for YouTube.
At nearly 90 years old, Curry announced in her recent video – “My ‘Goodbye’ to Skyrim” – that she will no longer be uploading Skyrim content.
Curry observes that, beyond “a few older, regular viewers,” the majority of people watching her videos “seem to be very young kids, children, and I’m not receiving any responses from them about the content.”
Comments like “Hi grandma” or “I love you, grandma” sometimes receive a like from Curry and many upvotes from other viewers, but she explains that this type of feedback “isn’t the reason I create and share videos.”
Curry explains she’ll continue posting vlogs occasionally, “once in a while when I have something to talk to you guys about, older ones.” She clarifies that when she refers to “older ones,” she means viewers who are teenagers or older, specifically those who have consistently engaged with her videos and communicated with her directly.
Regarding her religious blog (where she also talks about a follower mod for Skyrim inspired by Shirley Curry), Curry explains that she doesn’t want children simply visiting to say hello. Instead, she intends it to be a space for meaningful discussion. She states, “It’s for conversation.”
This issue resurfaces at the video’s conclusion; Curry appears drained by the difference between her large audience – over 1.3 million YouTube subscribers after a decade of uploading – and the level of genuine interaction she receives from them. She also mentions she’s finished playing Skyrim.
She explains that this decision comes as she approaches her 90th birthday. “I’ve always enjoyed creating my own stories within Skyrim,” she says, “and I’ll often make a few [videos] with a new character when I get a fresh idea. But I quickly lose interest. That’s why I’ve decided to stop sharing any more Skyrim content.”
I’m feeling burnt out and just not enjoying things as much lately. It’s likely due to the large number of younger viewers. That’s pretty much everything I wanted to share. I’m hoping my long-time viewers will continue to support me and stay engaged as you always have.
Earlier this year, Curry paused playing Skyrim to try out Oblivion Remastered as Grandma, finding Virtuos and Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered to be a relaxing change of pace.
Almost exactly a year ago, she first stopped creating gaming videos, explaining at the time that it “isn’t fun anymore, I’m tired of it, I’m bored to death with it.” This time around, it seems like her decision to retire from playing Skyrim is permanent.
