It’s clear that Krypto the Superdog is poised to steal the show in James Gunn’s Superman movie. We’ve already fallen for the mischievous alien dog based on the trailer alone. It turns out that Krypto was modeled quite closely on Gunn’s real-life rescue dog, Ozu. To our surprise, we discovered just how much of a resemblance there is between them. In a video shared on Gunn’s Instagram, we see him watching scenes from the film with Ozu, who can’t help but go wild with excitement as he watches Krypto on screen. You can check out this cute video right here: [Link to video]
In a surprising twist, it’s revealed that Krypto was based on the physical form of Ozu and given a white color to align with his DC Comics counterpart. This means that when Ozu gets excited or angry seeing Krypto on screen, he’s essentially reacting to his own virtual twin. As Gunn humorously puts it, “Each time he sees himself on screen, he attempts to eliminate himself.” Previously in October, Gunn shared the story of how Ozu entered his life and influenced the creation of Superman. Here’s what he had to express:
[OR]
Gunn discloses that Krypto was designed using Ozu as a model, then given a white shade to match his DC Comics character. So when Ozu reacts passionately upon seeing Krypto on screen, it’s essentially him reacting to his own mirror image. As Gunn humorously states, “Whenever he sees himself on screen, he plots to destroy himself.” In October, Gunn discussed how Ozu became part of his world and influenced the development of Superman. Here’s what he had to express:
Krypto, a character in the comic book ‘Superman’, was influenced by our real-life dog, Ozu. We brought Ozu home soon after I began writing Superman, and his past in a hoarding situation with over 60 other dogs meant he was anything but well-behaved. He wreaked havoc on our house, shoes, furniture, and even managed to chew up my laptop. It took a while before we could even touch him. I often pondered, ‘What if Ozu had superpowers? What a struggle life would be!’ This thought eventually led to the creation of Krypto, whose impact on the story mirrored the transformative effect Ozu was having on my own life.
In the comics, Krypto is often depicted as a white Labrador Retriever from Earth, but he’s actually a dog from the planet Krypton. So, he could look like any breed of dog! We particularly enjoy this scruffy, smaller version of Superman’s best friend. We’re excitedly counting down to see more of him in James Gunn’s Superman when it releases on July 11.
