In simple, engaging terms, viewers became captivated by more than just the plotline of Netflix’s hit miniseries Adolescence; they were also drawn into the hidden meanings portrayed within each scene. A subtle yet powerful moment in the third episode communicated volumes without any dialogue.
Among the four episodes, the standout one-scene dialogue was the tense encounter between Jamie, portrayed by Owen Cooper, and the court-appointed therapist, acted by Erin Doherty. Prior to their session, she extended a pickle and cheese sandwich to him as a gesture.
In the scene, Jamie makes it clear that he dislikes pickles and leaves the sandwich untouched for a while. Yet, surprisingly, he ends up taking a bite despite initially turning it down. Given that teenagers are known for their finicky eating habits, it might have been more logical if Jamie had let the sandwich sit instead of suddenly changing his mind about eating it.
A professional examined the situation and suggested that the action may hold a more meaningful implication. Psychologist Dannielle Haig shared her insights with the Daily Mail concerning the character’s underlying motive for that specific act.
He suggested that the sandwich being half what Jamie doesn’t like might serve as a test of his reaction,” he explained.
Haig pointed out that whether Jamie pushed the sandwich, ate it politely, or made a comment while doing so, these actions reveal his character. According to him, if the character endured the food without complaining, it might indicate a past experience of feeling powerless.
Given Jamie’s past as a bullied child who often felt helpless around his peers, it isn’t surprising that he passively eats his sandwich without commenting or protesting in the scene. Haig posits that this response could offer insight into Jamie’s self-perception regarding figures of authority.
Amelie Pease, who portrays Jaime’s older sister on the show, recently put forth a hypothesis regarding the sandwich scene. A friend of hers had suggested that “He takes a bite from the sandwich and then leaves it behind, but it seems like he doesn’t care about what’s inside the sandwich.” The actress added this thought.
As per the theory, Jaime consumed the sandwich since it was within easy reach. This act seems to reflect his general attitude towards other aspects of his life as well, implying that he tends to do things simply because he can, as further explained by Pease.
Adolescence is now streaming on Netflix.
