Stephen Graham is garnering widespread praise for his role in the latest Netflix hit “Adolescence,” and it’s not only his acting skills that are capturing attention. People are also warming up to his off-screen kindness, which is receiving even more admiration.
As a dedicated follower of nurturing fresh talent, I gave Owen Cooper, a 15-year-old prodigy, the leading role in our show – a decision that catapulted this newcomer into instant stardom. His riveting portrayal of Jamie Miller, a teenage murder suspect, has stirred ripples, garnering him critical acclaim and lavish compliments.
As stated by Graham, what truly sets this production apart is the captivating, raw, and emotional portrayal by Cooper. It’s worth noting that Graham has a history of fostering emerging talent, as he formed a deeply impactful relationship with Thomas Turgoose, his co-star from This is England, back in 2006.
At thirteen years old, Turgoose found himself among a band of older skinheads, who were led by the character Combo, portrayed by Graham. Here, Turgoose was a solitary young boy seeking a sense of camaraderie and acceptance within this group.
During this time, Thomas endured a great deal of sorrow as his mother passed away from cancer. Out of genuine concern for him, Graham and director Shane Meadows contemplated adopting him privately, should a solution to their current living situation not be found promptly.
In their conversation with The Independent, the actor shared, “Stephen Graham and Vicky McClure made a commitment to me. They said that once This Is England came out, they wouldn’t simply abandon the project. Instead, they vowed to stand by my side and offer their continued support.
In an episode of the Private Parts podcast from 2021, Turgoose shared, “I spent a significant amount of time with Shane Meadows and Stephen Graham. They made a mutual agreement that if they felt I wasn’t getting along well with my father or if they thought he wasn’t capable of raising me properly, they would consider adopting me.
Fortunately, Turgoose and his father successfully forged a strong bond, and Graham continued to be a friend and ally, providing assistance throughout Turgoose’s life, not just during filming. He also mentioned, “However, they met my dad. And my dad is truly a genuine man! He’s labored tirelessly throughout his life, and he commands respect. Now, I and my father are the best of friends, whereas, when I moved in with him, we were strangers.
In the meantime, Stephen Graham praised Cooper’s performance in the Netflix hit as its most notable accomplishment. Just as he generously recognized Cooper, the actor is now poised for a remarkable career. Since his standout role in Adolescence, Cooper has secured another significant part – portraying a youthful Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights, sharing the screen with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
