Adolescence Co-Creator Reacts to Elon Musk’s ‘Absurd’ Comments About Racism on Netflix Show: ‘We’re Making a Point…’

In response to Elon Musk’s accusations on a post that his Netflix series promotes anti-white propaganda, show creator Jack Thorne clarified during an interview on the News Agent podcast that the intent was not to spread racism but rather to explore themes surrounding masculinity. He further explained that the series aims to depict criminal behavior among young boys in general, labeling Musk’s statements as “absurd.

During their conversation with the podcast host Thorne (who collaborated with Stephen Graham on the show), they emphasized, “We’re not addressing race with this production.” Instead, they clarified, “Our focus lies in exploring masculinity. Our intention is to delve into an issue, rather than labeling it as one specific thing. We’re suggesting that this topic pertains to boys.

Last week, Musk drew attention with his remark “Wow,” in response to a user’s post suggesting that Thorne altered the race of the real-life killer from a Black man/migrant to a white boy. The story further implied that he was influenced by the red pill movement online to become radicalized.

Despite the politically charged atmosphere surrounding it, Adolescence has successfully shattered several viewership milestones. The series, spearheaded by Owen Cooper, has attracted over 100 million viewing hours, capturing audience interest with its exploration of online radicalization among young boys and widespread accounts of knife crimes.

In a previous conversation with Deadline, one of the creators discussed an increasing issue: violence perpetrated by teenage boys against young girls. He pondered, “Why is this violent behavior from young males or adolescent boys towards young females or girls escalating? What’s causing it?” Their objective when they started working together was to delve into this complex problem as thoroughly as possible, offering thought-provoking questions rather than simple solutions. Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
