Anne Rice is best known for her novels about vampires and witches, but she also wrote historical fiction. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, her 1982 novel Cry to Heaven is being made into a film directed by Tom Ford. Even more exciting, the movie will feature Adele making her acting debut. The story is set in 18th-century Italy and focuses on the lives of castrati singers – men who were castrated at a young age to preserve their vocal range and become famous performers. These singers were huge stars of their time, much like today’s pop stars. We’re eager to see how this adaptation of Anne Rice’s Cry to Heaven turns out.
The movie Cry to Heaven boasts an impressive cast, featuring Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who previously worked together on Nosferatu. Other stars include Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, and Owen Cooper. The film also features Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schafer, Josephine Thiesen, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, Hauk Hannenmann, and Lux Pascal—Pedro Pascal’s sister. Notably, Thandiwe Newton also appears in the film, which is a fitting role considering her early work in Interview with the Vampire, where her character was bitten by a vampire.
A movie adaptation of Anne Rice’s Cry to Heaven is in the early stages of production, filming in London and Rome starting in January. It’s expected to be released in theaters in the fall of 2026. AMC currently owns the rights to adapt all of Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches books indefinitely. While The Feast of All Saints was previously adapted as a TV mini-series in the 2000s, a modern version could be welcome. However, Rice’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy, known for its erotic themes, will probably never be adapted for the screen – and perhaps that’s just as well, given the sensitive material. It remains to be seen if this Cry to Heaven adaptation will encourage more of Anne Rice’s work to be adapted into films.
