Adamantium Finally Arrives in MCU: Brave New World Reveals Ultimate Metal!

2025 finds me in a world where it’s common knowledge that Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will either reboot or significantly reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As we inch closer to incorporating the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other Fox-owned characters into the main 616 universe, it’s almost like the current series of movies and shows are treading water – perhaps even stretching our patience. So, it’s quite unexpected when something in the MCU hints at an X-Men connection. In Captain America: Brave New World, that intriguing nudge is Adamantium – yes, Adamantium has now entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” the newly elected president Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (played by Harrison Ford) addresses a select group of global leaders about an astonishing new material they’ve found, one that boasts a strength and durability comparable to Vibranium. To clarify, while Ross mentions it as being “more indestructible,” such a claim is impossible, as “indestructible” means something that cannot be destroyed at all. Nevertheless, the enigma metal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe turns out to be Adamantium, which was unearthed within the remains of a Celestial in the Indian Ocean – yes, the same one from “Eternals.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the access to Adamantium steers the entire narrative of the film, approaching the intensity of a global conflict akin to World War III. Notably, unlike Vibranium, Adamantium is not confined within the borders of an isolated nation in the MCU, making it a highly sought-after resource. This subtle jab at Wakanda adds a political dimension to what would otherwise be a straightforward political thriller.

1963 saw the debut of Adamantium in Marvel Comics’ Avengers #66. This extraordinary metal was crafted by metallurgist Dr. Myron MacLain. The Avengers were the ones who put its resilience to the test, withstanding assaults from Iron Man, Goliath, and even Thor, the God of Thunder. Ultron ordered Vision to pilfer this indestructible metal, which was then utilized by him to forge armor for his newly-constructed robotic body.

Although initially introduced in the Avengers comic series, Adamantium is largely synonymous with the X-Men due to Wolverine. Given his regenerative abilities, he was an ideal candidate for adhering this metal to his skeleton. Notably, even his claws are composed of Adamantium. It’s safe to say that if you’ve encountered Adamantium in any context, it’s likely connected to Wolverine and not any other character.

Indeed, it’s common knowledge that the X-Men universe is set to intersect with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the anticipation for this event may lessen its impact. However, including references to Adamantium across movies and shows prior to the collision serves as an enjoyable teaser of what lies ahead.

Captain America: Brave New World is in cinemas now.
