As a fan of action movies, I’ve always been amazed by what actors put their bodies through to make those thrilling scenes happen. It’s easy to forget that all those incredible stunts come at a real cost. While a lot of injuries heal, some actors end up with lasting damage – things like bones that don’t fully recover, hearing loss, or even spinal problems. It really makes you think about the risks they take to entertain us, and it’s a stark reminder that there’s a lot of danger hidden behind all the glamour and excitement we see on screen.
Jackie Chan

During the filming of ‘Armour of God’ in 1986, Jackie Chan had a serious accident when he fell from a tree, fracturing his skull. He needed emergency brain surgery, and the injury left a permanent hole in his head, which is now covered by a plastic plate. He also experienced some hearing loss in one ear because of the fall. This is considered his most dangerous injury throughout his career of performing stunts.
Sylvester Stallone

During the filming of ‘The Expendables’ in 2010, Sylvester Stallone broke a bone in his neck while working on a fight scene with Steve Austin. The injury was serious enough to require surgery to insert a metal plate for support. Stallone has said his neck never regained its full strength and flexibility after the incident, adding to the many physical challenges he’s faced throughout his career making action films.
Linda Hamilton

During filming of the 1991 movie ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day,’ Linda Hamilton experienced permanent hearing loss in one ear. This happened during the elevator shootout scene when she forgot to put her earplugs back in between takes, and the loud blank gunshots caused the damage. She’s talked about the ongoing effects of the injury in the years since. Despite this, she finished the movie and even returned to the ‘Terminator’ series in 2019 with ‘Terminator: Dark Fate.’
George Clooney

During the filming of ‘Syriana’ in 2005, George Clooney suffered a serious spinal injury while shooting a torture scene. This caused spinal fluid to leak, leading to chronic back pain. He underwent several surgeries to fix the damage, and still occasionally experiences discomfort and limited mobility as a result. The injury significantly impacted how he took on physically demanding roles in future films.
Charlize Theron

While filming ‘Aeon Flux’ in 2005, Charlize Theron seriously injured her spine when she landed on her neck during a backflip. The injury was so severe it almost caused paralysis and halted production for several weeks while she received emergency care. Though she recovered and avoided permanent paralysis, she continues to experience nerve damage from the accident. This led her to be more careful when performing stunts in later films, such as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015).
Uma Thurman

During filming of ‘Kill Bill: Vol. 2’ in 2004, Uma Thurman was in a car accident that caused lasting damage to her knees and neck. Video of the crash clearly shows the severe impact and explains her ongoing physical difficulties and chronic pain. She’s often spoken about how the accident affected her confidence in on-set safety. Even now, the actress says she still lives with the physical effects of that stunt every day.
Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford has faced serious injuries on multiple film sets. During the making of ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ in 1984, he injured his back and received a new treatment involving enzyme injections. Then, while filming ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in 2015, a hydraulic door broke his ankle, causing lasting problems with his movement. These injuries have given him ongoing pain, but he still manages to work and even performs many of his own stunts.
Dylan O’Brien

During filming of ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ in 2018, the actor suffered a severe head injury and broke several bones in his face when a stunt went wrong. He was hit by a vehicle after being pulled off another, which led to a long recovery and lasting health problems. He’s openly discussed the emotional and mental challenges he faced after the accident, in addition to the physical injuries. Although he did return to complete the movie, the experience continues to affect him significantly.
Ruby Rose

While playing Batwoman in the TV series (2019–2022), Ruby Rose injured her back, suffering two herniated discs that nearly damaged her spinal cord. She needed immediate surgery to avoid permanent paralysis after losing feeling in her arms. Rose shared videos of the surgery to show how physically demanding leading roles in action shows can be. Ongoing pain and sensitivity in her spine ultimately led to her leaving the series.
Michelle Yeoh

While filming ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ in 2000, Michelle Yeoh seriously injured her knee, tearing her ACL during a challenging fight scene. She needed surgery and a long recovery, but she continued filming, using support braces and careful camera work. She’s mentioned that her knees haven’t been the same since, and this lasting injury has meant she’s had to modify her famous martial arts techniques in subsequent films.
Daniel Craig

Looking back at Daniel Craig’s time as Bond, it’s clear he really put his body on the line for those films. I remember hearing about a pretty bad knee injury he sustained during a fight scene in ‘Spectre’ – it actually required surgery and left him with lasting issues. And even earlier, during ‘Quantum of Solace’, he lost the tip of a finger! It’s incredible, really, that despite these significant and permanent setbacks, he remained so dedicated to the physically demanding role all the way up to his final film in 2021. You could definitely see a shift in how he approached those action sequences later on, likely as a result of those injuries.
Letitia Wright

Letitia Wright, while filming a car chase scene for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ (2022), broke her shoulder and suffered a serious concussion. The injuries were severe enough to stop filming for several months as she recovered. Even after she returned to set, she needed ongoing care for both the concussion and her shoulder injury. The accident demonstrated the dangers actors face when performing fast-paced stunts in today’s superhero movies.
Brendan Fraser

Brendan Fraser experienced significant injuries while making ‘The Mummy’ (1999) and its follow-up films, including back surgery, a knee replacement, and damage to his vocal cords. He needed seven years of on-and-off hospital treatment to deal with the effects of performing his own stunts. These injuries had a major impact on his health and career throughout the 2000s. Fraser has shared how the physical demands of being an action star ultimately led to lasting damage to his body.
