Actor James Ransone Has Passed Away, Age 46

James Ransone, an actor known for his roles in shows like The Wire and movies such as It: Chapter Two and the Sinister series, died Friday at the age of 46. Authorities have reported his death was by suicide.

James Ransone always stood out, no matter the size of the project. I recently revisited his early work in the 2002 film Ken Park, where he memorably played a disturbingly unsettling character. He quickly followed that up with a key role as Iggy Sobotka in the second season of HBO’s The Wire, and then played Cpl. Josh Ray Person in the highly praised miniseries Generation Kill. Ransone, known for his lean build and rapid speech, consistently delivered strong performances playing characters who were struggling or trying to make something of themselves.

In recent years, Ransone has frequently appeared in films directed by Scott Derrickson, notably as Deputy So-and-So in the Sinister movies and as Max, the brother of the villain, in The Black Phone films. He’s also had roles in Sean Baker’s Tangerine, an episode of Poker Face, and most memorably as the adult version of Eddie Kaspbrak in It: Chapter Two. Many viewers consider the relationship between his character and Bill Hader’s Ritchie Tozier to be the most heartfelt and compelling in that film.

Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and two young children, ages six and four.
