Activision is making Black Ops 6 free just in time for Battlefield 6’s launch

After a long period where Battlefield couldn’t compete with Call of Duty, the upcoming release of Battlefield 6 seems to have sparked a renewed rivalry between the two franchises. Call of Duty’s developers have been quiet in response to Battlefield’s challenges so far, but they’ve announced a week-long free trial for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 starting October 9, 2025 – just one day before Battlefield 6 is released, suggesting a direct response to the competition.

Activision is letting players get a free preview of Black Ops 6, including the campaign, multiplayer, and zombies modes. This is both a way to build excitement for the game’s release later this year and to potentially lessen the impact of a competing game launching around the same time.

EA’s marketing for Battlefield 6 has done a great job of appealing to FPS players who are tired of some of the things happening with Call of Duty. They’ve emphasized that the game will avoid silly character outfits and crossovers, and they recently drove this point home with a trailer that dramatically ‘killed off’ famous celebrities, replacing them with ordinary soldiers.

EA’s strong marketing for its own game has already influenced Activision’s plans for Black Ops 7. Unlike previous installments, skins bought in Black Ops 6 won’t be usable in the sequel – though players can still use them in Warzone. This decision has sparked debate and some frustration within the Call of Duty community, creating a challenge for Activision.

Although people seem to be leaning towards liking BF6, its success will really depend on how well it does when it’s released. Offering a short, free trial would be a smart way for Activision to encourage even more people to try it.

Battlefield 6 is launching on October 10th for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will follow on November 14, 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
