As a devoted fan who has followed Matthew Perry’s journey through his iconic role as Chandler Bing and his personal struggles, I am deeply moved by the establishment of The Matthew Perry Foundation. It is heartwarming to see such a noble cause born out of love for a beloved figure, one who bravely fought his own battles with addiction.
Established in the U.S. after the tragic death of Matthew Perry on October 28, 2023, the Matthew Perry Foundation aims to support individuals battling addiction by offering funds to community-based organizations.
As the first anniversary of Perry’s passing nears, those who knew him best are dedicated to preserving his legacy by pursuing endeavors that reflect his core values. The foundation, headed by Doug Chapin and Lisa Kasteler-Calio – longtime associates – is offering assistance to organizations working on bridging the gaps in addiction recovery programs.
Chapin, the board president, stated that one difficulty in remaining detached is that the organization was built from a deep affection for him. What unites us all, he explained, is our mutual love for him.” The foundation’s grants aim to supply resources to those who might struggle to find recovery programs or support networks.
The foundation has taken Matthew Perry’s 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” as a roadmap. This book, where Perry details his struggles with addiction, has become a framework for the organization’s goals. As Kasteler-Calio, the foundation’s executive director, put it, “We didn’t need to find our purpose; we already had it.
Matthew demonstrated incredible courage by penning that book and inviting others to join him in the process. He chose transparency over omission, and his intentions were not driven by a desire for fame or wealth, but rather by an earnest desire to aid others – the most significant goal he sought to achieve.
This foundation collaborates with another organization, established by the Perreys’ family in Canada. Collectively, they strive to maintain Perry’s legacy by fostering a constructive influence within the field of addiction recovery.
A major objective of this organization is to lessen the embarrassment that keeps many people from seeking aid. Approximately 48 million Americans grapple with addiction issues, yet merely one-fifth of them seek assistance because they feel ashamed.
Chapin pointed out that one major factor preventing individuals from seeking assistance is the perception or reality of stigma, which he referred to as a significant hurdle. Additionally, he mentioned that offering aid became more about specific projects for them rather than a general endeavor in helping people.
The foundation has already awarded grants to more than 20 organizations, including The Wall Las Memorias, which supports the Latino and LGBTQ+ communities in Los Angeles, and a telehealth counseling program for individuals incarcerated at California’s Santa Rita Jail.
Furthermore, the foundation has chosen to support the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, which is notably the first program to bear Perry’s name. Under the guidance of renowned physician Dr. Sarah Wakeman, this fellowship is designed to provide medical professionals with specialized education focused on treating addiction.
