As a big Disney fan, I was really bummed to hear that Disneyland Resort had to let around 100 cast members go. Deadline is reporting that the cuts impacted people working in lots of different areas around the resort, and unfortunately included some salaried positions too. It’s never good to hear about people losing their jobs, especially at a place as magical as Disneyland.
A Disneyland representative explained to Deadline that, as the park returns to normal operations, they are restructuring the business to keep providing great experiences for visitors and prepare for future growth.
We’ve made the tough choice to remove a small number of salaried positions. We truly appreciate everything these employees have done and are dedicated to helping them through this change with support and resources.
I was really struck by the news earlier this year about the Disneyland wage dispute. Disney reached a $233 million settlement with a group of employees who claimed they hadn’t been paid enough according to Anaheim’s local laws. It’s a significant outcome for those workers, and definitely something to keep an eye on as we see how these kinds of labor issues play out in the entertainment industry.
I was listening in on Disney’s latest earnings call, and Bob Iger shared some interesting news about park attendance. While they’ve seen a small drop in international visitors this year, domestic attendance has really stepped up to compensate. He specifically said they’re ‘clearly more than making up for it’ with guests from within the U.S., which is a positive sign for the company.
Disneyland and similar parks continue to be a significant money-maker for the company. The park in Anaheim is planned to receive $1.9 billion in improvements over the next two decades, despite the company’s efforts to reduce spending elsewhere. Disney also recently reduced its workforce in other parts of the business through layoffs.
