As a seasoned gamer of both the world of Philadelphia-based sitcoms and the realm of elementary school dramas, I must say this crossover between “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary” has me utterly thrilled! The thought of Mac, Dennis, Dee, Charlie, and Frank navigating the halls of Abbott Elementary is a hilarious prospect that I can hardly contain my excitement for.
“The Gang Ruins A School (Probably)”
The team from Paddy’s Pub is about to embark on a journey across town for a TV collaboration. Characters from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be visiting Abbott Elementary. Rob McElhenney announced this exciting news via social media, giving us a hint about when we can see Mac, Dennis, Dee, Charlie, and Frank in school. The makers of Abbott Elementary have also revealed which season four episode the characters will appear in, as well as some insights into their role in the episode.
In an interview with Variety before the fourth season premiere of Abbott Elementary this week, creators Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker shared details about when the crossover between their Philadelphia-based shows will occur. The characters from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will make a significant appearance in episode nine, not just for a brief cameo.
Schumacker mentioned that the entire group, along with their main plot (“A” story), secondary plots (“B” and “C,” “D”), are all part of this production. This extensive crossover with Paddy’s Pub will dominate the entire episode. Additionally, Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny has a substantial storyline in it. Is this due to his past role as a school janitor on another show? I can hardly wait to discover more about it!

Another possibility is that Day was available more frequently due to scheduling conflicts with Glenn Howerton and Kaitlin Olsen, as they are still working on the remaining scenes for other reasons related to filming obligations.
Executive producers note that viewers of “Abbott Elementary” who aren’t familiar with the long-running comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” can relax because the cast from “It’s Always Sunny” will simply appear as special guest stars. On the other hand, fans of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” will discover a much deeper meaning within “Abbott Elementary”.
Despite initial doubts about how the humor from these two shows would blend, Schumacker found that any concerns disappeared once Day appeared on set. He stated, “All our worries about the tones clashing were quickly eased when we started filming with Charlie.” Both Day and McElhenney’s contributions to the writing process also played a significant role in this seamless integration.
Even if the Paddy’s Pub group manages to cause damage at a school, it’s clear that they wouldn’t be running something like “Abbott Elementary”.
