‘A Wooden Throne’: What Does Helaena’s Prophecy On Aegon Indicate About His Future? Find Out

As a devoted fan with a heart full of dragon fire and a mind brimming with theories, I must say that the season finale of House of The Dragon has truly taken me by storm! The intricate weaving of plotlines, character development, and unexpected twists have left me breathless and eagerly anticipating the next episode.

Spoilers ahead for House of The Dragon season 2 finale!

Instead of featuring significant clashes or showdowns, the season finale instead introduced captivating turns for some key characters. Throughout the entire series, there were hints suggesting Daemon’s ambitious intent to seize the throne. However, this assumption was refuted when he pledged allegiance to his “true queen,” Rhaenyra, contradicting earlier speculations. His decision was significantly influenced by a shocking vision involving Helaena Targaryen.

As the Fire & Blood account for Aegon II’s sister lacks extensive details, the showmakers decided to embellish her character by incorporating a prophetic Targaryen vision, thereby significantly influencing the power struggle.

In a surprising turn of events, the gentle, timid, and somewhat air-headed Helaena revealed her formidable nature when she confronted Aemond over his actions of burning Aegon. She ominously warned him that he would meet his end in a future battle at God’s Eye.

She predicts to him, “Aegon will regain his throne as king. He’s not tasted victory yet. He presently occupies a simple seat. And you… you won’t live much longer.” This prophecy mirrors the narrative developed by George R.R Martin in Fire & Blood. As depicted in the last episode of season 2, Aegon departs from Kings Landing, managing to escape capture and death that was planned for him by Rhaenyra.

As an ardent admirer, let me rephrase the scenario: Despite seizing King’s Landing and reclaiming the Iron Throne, Aegon finds himself in a dire predicament during his duel with Baela Targaryen on Moondancer. In the heat of the battle, he leaps from Sunfyre, only to shatter both legs upon landing. Crippled and immobile, Aegon is borne aloft on a makeshift wooden litter. Later, he governs from a specially crafted seat carved into wood, stationed at the foot of the Iron Throne steps—a seat Helaena derisively terms as his “wooden throne!”

In the books, Helena was not portrayed as a Targaryen prophet; instead, she was deeply traumatized following her son’s murder, which ultimately drove her into madness and suicide. Given that the show has significantly deviated from the original storyline, it remains to be seen whether her destiny will diverge from the source material when the next season airs.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but geek out over Phia Saban’s portrayal of Helaena. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, she confessed her bewilderment about Helaena’s future in the upcoming season: “That scene in episode 8 showcased just how potent and forceful Helaena can be, but I don’t believe that’s the full extent of her abilities now.”

Saban expressed that it wouldn’t shock her if Helaena retreated back into her shell and remained silent, as hinted in the last episode. “Perhaps there’s a chance for me to delve deeper into that dreamlike realm again,” she said, expressing enthusiasm. “I’d relish the opportunity,” she continued, suggesting that Helaena should spend more time with Daemon!
