A VENOM Animated Film Is in Delevelopment

It looks like the live-action Venom movies with Tom Hardy have finished, but Sony Pictures still plans to make more Venom content. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Sony is developing an animated Venom movie, and has hired Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein – the directors of the popular Final Destination: Bloodlines – to lead the project. While the film is in very early development, Tom Hardy is expected to be involved, potentially as a producer. There’s also a chance he could voice the character, creating a fresh take on the famous Marvel antihero.

Sony Pictures Animation has seen huge success with its Spider-Verse films and last year’s unexpected hit, Kpop Demon Hunters. If they can bring that same creativity to a Venom movie, it could revitalize the character. While it’s unknown if the upcoming animated Venom film will connect to the Spider-Verse series, a connection would be fairly simple to establish. So far, Venom hasn’t appeared in either Into the Spider-Verse or Across the Spider-Verse. Sony previously planned spin-offs for other Spider-Man villains, but those were canceled after Kraven, Morbius, and Madame Web didn’t perform well. However, Venom has consistently earned significant box office revenue, and Sony was determined to keep that franchise going.

The biggest question surrounding this project is whether Spider-Man will make an appearance. The previous films changed Venom’s backstory, separating him from being a core Spider-Man villain – that’s why Tom Hardy’s movies don’t show him with the large spider symbol on his chest. Back then, when Tom Holland was first introduced as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony couldn’t directly mention the character. But animated films offer more freedom. An animated Venom movie could really explore his connection with Spider-Man, but tell the story entirely from Venom’s perspective. Venom is a great fit for animation because of his already exaggerated and cartoon-like appearance. Hopefully, Sony Animation can deliver a fantastic film.
