As a dedicated cinephile, it’s been fascinating to witness video games, dolls, and other playthings transitioning onto the big screen as live-action movies lately. Blockbusters like Minecraft and Barbie have proven this concept can be incredibly successful. So, it seemed inevitable that Hollywood would eventually focus its attention on the origin of these beloved toys. According to a report from Variety, a film is currently in development about the legendary toy store chain, Toys ‘R’ Us. This project is being helmed by Story Kitchen, and rumor has it, the script will draw some inspiration from Night at the Museum. Therefore, we might be treated to a movie where numerous iconic toys spring to life after dark, similar to Toy Story, but with much more freedom for these living playthings to cause mischief!
According to Story Kitchen’s co-founders, Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg, this is their take on the rumored Toys ‘R’ Us film project:
In their own words, Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg from Story Kitchen discussed the possibility of the upcoming Toys ‘R’ Us movie:
Story Kitchen co-founders, Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg, spoke about the potential Toys ‘R’ Us film, sharing their thoughts on the project.
For ’80s children who regarded Toys ‘R’ Us as a magical wonderland, it is an honor for us to collaborate in producing a movie that will embody the essence of exploration, imagination, and the nostalgic charm that Toys ‘R’ Us has come to symbolize.
The creators hint at their childhood in the 80s and a sense of nostalgia, which indicates that the movie will likely take place during the peak era of the retail chain. This is plausible since the 80s were when Kenner’s Star Wars toys, as well as Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Thundercats, Barbie, Care Bears, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Strawberry Shortcake, Smurfs, and many other popular toy brands, reached their maximum popularity. Can you envision a film where these toys magically come to life and embark on an exciting adventure alongside a group of spirited children? Granted, securing the rights for all these different toy brands might be a daunting task. However, the potential earnings from such a movie, both among kids and adults reminiscing about their past, could be immense. As long as Toys ‘R’ Us mascot Geoffrey Giraffe plays a substantial role, we’re eager to watch it!
