Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are very pleased with the progress of *Mortal Kombat II*, and are already starting work on a third movie, even though the second one isn’t out yet. The news was revealed at New York Comic Con 2025, as reported by *Deadline*. Jeremy Slater, who wrote and executive produced the sequel (*Moon Knight*), will return to write the third film. The first trailer for *Mortal Kombat II* was a huge success, earning 107 million views worldwide in just 24 hours – a record for a red-band trailer.
I was really excited when I saw Lewis Tan as Cole Young in the 2021 *Mortal Kombat* movie! He played an MMA fighter battling enemies from Outworld to literally save the world. It was a fresh start for the story, rebooting the classic ’90s film and the famous video games. Even though it came out right when the pandemic was really hitting hard, it became a huge success on HBO Max and made over $84 million in theaters – a great return on its $55 million budget! We all immediately wanted a sequel, and New Line announced one pretty quickly. But it’s been a long wait – almost five years! Production got completely stopped by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, but thankfully, it’s finally coming out.
The sequel to *Mortal Kombat* will bring back Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. New additions to the cast include Karl Urban (known from *The Boys*) and Tati Gabrielle. *Mortal Kombat II* is currently scheduled for release on May 15, 2026, after being moved from its original October 2025 date. There are no plans yet for a release date for a potential third film, and fans are hoping the wait between installments won’t be as long this time around.
