In The Elder Scrolls Online, characters can branch out and secondary specialize into various skill sets beyond their primary class. This versatile system effectively grants players the ability to explore and master a wide range of abilities, ultimately unlocking them all for unrestricted use, making it seem as though they’re skills native to their original class.
As a seasoned gamer, here’s my take on it:
To get your hands on the subclassing system, you’ve got to track down a certain NPC and finish their side quest. But there’s a catch – you need to meet a specific prerequisite before you can embark on this quest.
Where to Find Bahtra at-Hunding (A Study in Discipline) in Elder Scrolls Online
To begin “A Study in Discipline” and gain access to subclassing, you must first raise one of your characters to level 50 on your account.
Following the progress of one character reaching level 50, any subsequent characters created under the same account become eligible for subclasses. To access this feature, locate Bahtra at-Hunding across three distinct areas in the game.
- Riften in The Rift – just to the west of the main waypoint where you can fast-travel to.
- Dune in Reaper’s March – under the bridge next to the waypoint.
- Evermore in Bangkorai – in the town before the dungeon in the top right of the region.

Conversing with her initiates the process for obtaining a subclass, and the remaining steps of the quest are generally easy to navigate from that point onward. Initially, she’ll inquire about your preferred class for subclassing, but don’t worry as this question won’t influence any decisions. The actual subclass selection will take place in the subsequent menu.
How Does Subclassing Work in Elder Scrolls Online

When conversing with Bahtra at-Hunding, you’ll have the opportunity to select a secondary skill set from any two classes other than your initial one. This will provide you with complete mastery over that chosen skill set, but it will also restrict you to this path until it reaches level 50. Skills within your subclassed skill line will require twice as many skill points to unlock compared to your main class skills, and the experience earned for this skill line will progress at a much slower rate.
Once a skill reaches level 50, it is considered Mastered, enabling you to utilize it freely with your character, much like one of your main skill lines. This opens up the opportunity to swap out that skill line for another, allowing you to pursue mastery in various areas. If you’re prepared to invest time and effort, this system allows a single character to learn any skill in the game, offering endless possibilities for unique combinations.
