A Robert Downey, Jr. DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Cameo as Tony Stark Was Written in Early Script

As a gamer with a decade-long journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the news of a potential Tony Stark cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine is like finding an unopened collectible box in the darkest corner of my gaming closet. It’s a tantalizing piece of information that leaves me both excited and slightly heartbroken, much like when I almost beat a game on the hardest difficulty level, only to find out there was a secret level I hadn’t discovered yet.

In their unique collaboration, Deadpool and Wolverine featured numerous guest appearances, but one particular scene, as revealed by Paul Wernick in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, would have truly stolen the show. Originally scripted for Deadpool & Wolverine was a scene where Robert Downey Jr., reprising his role as Tony Stark from the Avengers series, was intended to make an appearance. You can easily imagine how this would fit – Wade, hoping to join the Avengers, visits Avengers Tower and requests a meeting with Happy Hogan, inquiring about Tony Stark’s involvement. Naturally, Tony wasn’t present, and Happy declined his application, but earlier drafts of the script had Tony right there alongside Happy, ready with his signature witty remark about Deadpool. Alas, it never came to be.

As a dedicated fan, I can share that a script featuring a potential Downey cameo as Iron Man, known as the Downey draft, was indeed prepared by the writers. This scene was designed to be flexible, allowing for adjustments if Robert Downey Jr. declined or Marvel decided against it. While we’re not entirely sure why it didn’t materialize, it’s likely due to Downey’s significant return as Doctor Doom in the MCU. Regardless, the Deadpool and Wolverine scene turned out fantastic, proving that even without Iron Man making a cameo, the magic of storytelling can still shine brightly.
