A New Netflix Series Is Adapting a Classic Sci-Fi Author

Netflix is expanding its science fiction offerings with a new series adapted from Philip K. Dick’s novel, The World Jones Made.

Netflix is creating a new Spanish-language series called The Future is Ours. It’s the first time Philip K. Dick’s stories will be adapted into a Spanish-language show, and it’s being made in partnership with Dick’s estate, Electric Shepherd Productions, and K&S Films – the team that created the popular Spanish-language series The Eternaut.

The Future is Ours is a planned eight-part series. It takes place in South America in 2047, a time when the environment is failing.

A group of nations, known as FedSur, has united to maintain order and safeguard the environment. Simultaneously, a person with the power of foresight appears. Police officer Hugo Crussí begins investigating the source of these predictions and finds they come from Jonás Flores, a young preacher who quickly gains a large following. Crussí eventually joins those opposing FedSur and becomes a fugitive.

Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s VP of Content for Latin America, shared that the company is approaching Philip K. Dick’s work with deep respect, recognizing its continuing relevance. He acknowledged the project is ambitious but expressed pride in telling a story that portrays Latin America as a center of resistance. Ramos emphasized this will be a groundbreaking, high-quality production for the region, proving that stories of this scale can be created in Spanish, from Latin American countries.

I’m really excited to hear that Mateo Gil will be leading the creative side of things as showrunner! And the directing lineup is incredible – Vincente Amorim, Daniel Rezende, and Jesús Braceras are all fantastic. I think this series is in really capable hands.

This team has a track record of successful Spanish-language series on Netflix, including titles like The Eternaut, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Pedro Páramo, and Senna. The show stars Emiliano Zurita, Delfina Chaves, Enzo Vogrincic, Marleyda Soto, and Marco Antonio Caponi.

Isa Dick Hackett, Philip K. Dick’s daughter, praised the series, stating that the adaptation is both creative and daring while still capturing the spirit of the original novel. She also expressed her belief that Latin America’s vibrant culture and talented artists make it a perfect location for such a large-scale project, and she was impressed by the team’s dedication.

While Netflix hasn’t revealed when it will be released, the series will reimagine Philip K. Dick’s original ideas with a new Latin American backdrop, blending sci-fi elements with insights on politics and society.
