Paramount is making a big push to bring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back to the big screen.
The studio is working on a new live-action movie about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, produced by Neal H. Moritz, known for his work on the Sonic the Hedgehog films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is aiming for a family-friendly adventure centered on the four turtle brothers – Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo – though details are currently limited.
The plans for a more mature, R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, The Last Ronin, have been temporarily paused. Announced earlier in 2024, the film – inspired by a gritty graphic novel series – previously had Walter Hamada (formerly of Warner Bros.) and Tyler Burton Smith on board, according to Variety.
Ilya Naishuller, the director behind the film Nobody, was considered to direct the project. However, sources indicate it’s currently stalled and unlikely to be made in the near future.
It’s been a while since fans saw a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie – the last one, Out of the Shadows, came out in 2016 and didn’t perform well financially. Following that, Paramount opted for animation, releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in 2023. This animated film, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, earned a respectable $181 million worldwide. A follow-up, Mutant Mayhem 2, is currently scheduled to hit theaters on September 17, 2027.
Paramount hopes a lighthearted, family-focused movie will breathe new life into the franchise and attract a younger audience.
