A New GHOSTBUSTERS Animated Series Is Coming to Netflix

As someone who grew up with the ghostly adventures of Egon, Peter, Ray, and Winston on Saturday mornings, I can hardly contain my excitement about this new Ghostbusters animated series on Netflix! Having followed Elliott Kalan’s impressive work on The Daily Show and MST3K reboot, I have no doubt that he will bring the same wit and humor to our beloved ghost-busting team.

Many youngsters developed a fondness for the Ghostbusters mainly through their small-screen antics rather than their big-screen appearances. The Real Ghostbusters animated series was instrumental in igniting this affection towards the four protagonists. Without this cherished cartoon, it’s highly probable that the Ghostbusters franchise would have faded into obscurity like the ghosts they chase. Now, Netflix is trying to rekindle that enchanting animation once more by producing a brand-new Ghostbusters animated series – the third one to be created in its long history.

According to Variety, Netflix has formally approved a 3D “Ghostbusters” animated series. Discussions about a possible new cartoon on the streaming platform began as early as 2022. This will be the third animated “Ghostbusters” series ever, with the latest being “Extreme Ghostbusters,” which aired for 40 episodes towards the end of 1997.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be stepping into the role as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the newest cartoon series. You might recognize me from my time as the head writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Beyond that, I’ve had the pleasure of working on projects like the reboot of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and HouseBroken. Can’t wait to bring my creativity to this exciting new venture!

Sony Pictures Animation will team up with Netflix for the production of the show, while Ghost Corps, Inc., led by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, will also co-produce. Reitman and Kenan, who both wrote and took turns directing ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, will serve as executive producers on the show. The series is said to share a similar tone with these films according to Variety.

It’s unclear whether the animated series will include characters similar to those in the movies, but it seems likely. If this Netflix show becomes as popular as “The Real Ghostbusters” once was, we might continue seeing new “Ghostbusters” films for another 40 years.
