A New Generation Is Trying to Save the Emperor in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered — and the Assassin Corpses Are Piling Up

If you’ve experienced The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion or its latest version, Oblivion Remastered, you’re familiar with the initial tutorial segment and the memorable scene of exiting the Imperial sewers. You also recognize the surprising death that occurs just before your daring escape, leaving you momentarily bewildered as you step into the stunningly beautiful landscape of Cyrodiil.

Warning! Spoilers for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered follow.

Back then, in 2006, when Oblivion was freshly released, it was a right of passage for us gamers to attempt to shield Emperor Uriel Septim from his imminent demise at the hands of the Mythic Dawn. I remember that fateful day well, knowing full-well that his end was near and yet still holding onto hope that I could somehow change fate. Even today, as a veteran player, I can’t help but replay Oblivion in an attempt to save him one more time, knowing all too well that his death is inevitable.

After countless attempts with arrows and numerous attempts to save him, I eventually realized that Septim was beyond salvation, unless one resorted to altering the game through mods or console commands. It’s clear now that Oblivion is a story where the Emperor must die at the outset; given this, it seems logical that Bethesda developers ensured his demise, regardless of any efforts by players to prevent it.

Currently, 20 years after the original release of Oblivion, a new crop of fans are endeavoring, yet ultimately unsuccessful, to safeguard the Emperor. Essentially, they’re attempting and falling short, much like their predecessors. The players are poised with bow and arrow, ready for the assassin to materialize from the darkness in an effort to preemptively eliminate him before he strikes the Emperor. Unfortunately, their efforts prove futile.

As a novice myself, I hadn’t realized that conversing with the Emperor was crucial, and unfortunately, this oversight led to a chaotic situation where we found ourselves surrounded by slain assassins. The relentless tide of Mythic Dawn minions kept pouring in, eager for battle.

Others are seeking out their revenge on the Mythic Dawn, piling those corpses high.

Fresh arrivals learn that as long as you don’t engage with the Emperor, the assassins will persistently continue their attacks. They have no choice but to carry on, for they are relentless and seemingly endless.

It turned out that bypassing the Emperor would result in an almost endless number of cultists appearing during the defense phase, which made the original game quite challenging for me to enjoy. However, I’m thrilled that they’ve updated and enhanced the game in the remastered version.

Players are resorting to using console commands, which leads to interruption of the cutscene that’s intended to unfold following the Emperor’s death.

dont try and save the emperor…

Back when I first dived into Oblivion, if you’re anything like me, you’d have made several attempts to save the Emperor. Yet, despite my best efforts, I eventually conceded defeat. Even with a fresh spin in Oblivion Remastered, I held out hope that the developers had introduced a new twist, but it seems fate has decreed that the Emperor meets his end, even in 2025 – just as he did so many years ago.

In the meantime, players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered are advising newbies to complete Kvatch city before the game’s level adjustment turns it into a terrifying challenge. Additionally, there’s news about a player who successfully ventured beyond Cyrodiil to explore Valenwood, Skyrim, and even Hammerfell, which is speculated to be the location of The Elder Scrolls VI.
